I had the pleasure of shooting in Paul Morgan's studio and his softboxes had 40 degree grids on them. The lighting looked fantastic, so of course, now I want some grids for my softboxes. Besides not wanting to pay a fortune, here's the issue -- my softboxes are 20 year old Broncolor 30"x30" with a flush front and no place to attach Velcro (unless I add some Velcro to the sides). Any thoughts on where I can buy the grids? Would it be cheaper to buy more modern softboxes and grids? Is there another way to achieve this lighting without grids?

Here are a couple of shots I took in Paul Morgan's studio. I just love how this lighting looks. Model is Avalon.

I am not up on the grid your looking for but I think you did one heck of a job with Avalon. What are the grids doing ? And does Avalon have a portfolio on line ?

You could look at Amvona's softboxes:

http://tinyurl.com/42v44

I have the big one shown in the link and I got it brand new through their eBay auction for $90. It comes with a set of Louvers as well as other masks for that price. The Louvers will work just about like a grid. The price is certainly attractive. You do have to provide your own speedring (but you may have that already with your old box).

Cheers,
rfs

maybe you will just have to use my softboxes and grids to get the effect I showed you during the shoot.

I went to seppa here in Atlanta and got a good look at some new softboxes from Interfit, a division of Paterson lighting. They offer some really nice softboxes for the budget conscious. I was looking at photoflex stripboxes and had almost purchased, but I think I will be going with the interfit ones. B & H sells their stripbox for $75 and the grids will be available very shortly for almost all of their softboxes, including the octoboxes.
Thier website is Paterson Lighting . I spoke to the rep here in Atlanta and she said the grids should be available in the next month. I would think the stripbox with the grid would be around the $150 range, making it a very good deal.

Big "Thank You" to all the guys who responded. You've given me several new places to look for inepensive softbox grids.

For those interested in booking Avalon, she's listed on the "Other" website. Since she's sorta my "house" model you can also contact her through me.

Here's one from my shoot yesterday. Model is an up and coming "custom bikini" designer and fashion model Karen Allan. She's not listed yet, so you can contact her through me.
