My Epson 1280 leaves black roller marks on the back of my images, and from time to time I get splotches in the borders of the front of images.

How does one clean the rollers?

Did you try using a cleaning sheet? They are available in here (check other brand, etc, too)

DO NOT USE ALCHOHOL! It seems like a good idea but alchohol breaks down lots of rubber compounds.

I use an audio tape deck cleaner something like this

I've known several copier/printer techs who use rubber rejuvinator, there are several brands, I trust most of the Tech Spray products here is their version.

The Epson cleaning sheets are good but they don't lift dried on ink very well. You'll want to use some sort of blotter type cleaning sheet after using a cleaner.

I've actually pinned the exit rollers on my P2200 up so they don't contact the paper because the Ilford photo paper I use doesn't dry quickly enough. It's not perfect though, sometime the head will strike on really curled paper and start siphoning... pretty annoying.
