Currently Im using a FujiFinePix s3100 (A GWC Camera, but I've gotten a few good pics) and I have found a place where I can put a Canon digital rebel on lay away (my only option for getting anything over 300.00) however there is also a place where I can put a 20d on lay away as well.

Here's my question, should I take the middle step to the rebel, of the big step to the 20d?

How much time is it going to take me to learn to use either one?

Speaking as pro photographer and former semiconductor photomask engineering manager ...
Current digitial censors are FAR from state of art {Canon 1ds II is .25 micron technology} and state of art is .09 - or 3 generations ahead. Cameras are on 2 year design cycles. Thus expect your value to drop by 50% every 2 years and there will be many more digi camera improvements in near future.
If you want high detail go for max resolution ... if you want value go for 1 generation less than current {10D VS 20D AND 1DS VS 1DS ii}.
A used 10D is smart over Rebel or 20D. 20D is twice the price and only 30% more res. Rebel has its own issues and better to pass. Just happen to have a 10D I might sell but think 20D is not enuff improvement for twice the $$$. Looking at used 1Ds.
10D 20D and Rebel are all same level in learn difficulty.
NOTE - I still do my most demanding work on film medium and large format.
Good Luck - Great shootin ...

Well Titan...let me tell my opinion...Ive spent enuff money on two cameras that I could have purchased a 10d by now....so buy the best you can afford.
if you can pay off the lay away on the 20d....I'd go for it.
Don.

Depends if you're talking about the Rebel or the Rebel XT. Both have drastically inferior shooting speed, autofocus, and metering compared to the 20D. However, while the 20D has a much better sensor than the Rebel, it shares its sensor with the XT. It's not the 2mp difference, but the color quality and tones that make the 20D sensor one of the best out there. If you can afford the extra money to step up to the 20D it's absolutely worth it.

As for ease of use it has a few more controls because it allows you to do more, but neither is terribly complicated. You'll probably have an easier time learning to use the 20D because the Rebel and Rebel XT are so tiny when you go to press a button you press 18 simultaneously and there's no way to know which did what. Rebel 300D .... don't think about them now with the XT out

Rebel XT ... still rebel body, the newer AF system from Canon and decent color and quality

20d Cha-ching, woln't have the limitations of the Rebel body design, more durable pro and a true workhorse.

Currently 100$ rebates on the 20d worth taking advantage of, if your looking to go pro, or just maybe do some shooting for money, put it into the 20d, if your going to be just looking to expand on a hobby, you can consider the xt and eventually upgrade if need be.

Just my $0.02

Here's the deal. By the time you pay off and get out what ever you layed away there will be something bigger, better, faster and with the way things are going CHEAPER. The absolute smartest thing you can do is SAVE your money and when you feel you can afford what ever is the cutting edge at that time then buy it. If you are going to take a year or less to pay off the camera you might be surprised at what will be available by the time you are ready to purchase. Heard somebody say Canon has another one due out this summer.

Titan,

I'm a Nikon shooter but have a couple of pro friends who shoot Canon, the 20D is a no-brainer. It'll be worth every second of the wait compared to the digital rebel.

Remember one thing, once you buy the camera then you start buying glass and that, my friend, is the never ending story.

Good luck,

Shannon

i hope your options are the rebel xt (not the first rebel 6MP) and the 20d.. check out my post earlier "$750 a good price for 10D" if money is not an object for you by all means put that 20d on lay away. but if it is.. then i would consider picking up a 10d like i did it pretty much has all the manual settings you'll need. i havent had a chance to take it out for a shoot yet because im swamped with research papers and i have a test on mon good luck with your choice!!

And I'd say that the overwhelming majority is... the 20d. that's cool, I dont want to buy anything else from wal mart anyway.
