One that's not sold anymore. 200/1.8 is one of the highest rated I've ever seen. 85/1.2 is up there too.

PhotoDo.com rated the 200/1.8 a 4.8 out of 5. The 85/1.2 a 4.6. Those are the 2 highest rated canon lenses on the site. There are quite a few 4.4 primes.

I have the 85 1.2 and its incredible...I haven't compared it to the 70-200L though...but for the price the 85 is a strong lens...

It would be real dumb to discontinue one's sharpest lens, don't you think?

There was recently a thread on FM (Fred Miranda) about comparing the 200 f1.8 to the 300IS f2.8 and (if I recall corectly) most of the people who had both lenses, rated the 300IS f2.8 every bit as Sharp.

While it has long been true that a Canon "L" prime (such as the 24mm, 35mm, 85mm f1.2, 135 f2.0) are sharper than their corresponding "L" Zoom Lenses.

I have achieved shots with unbelievable detail with both the 24-70L and the 70-200L IS 2.8...

Let me ask you a question

Why is Canon "L" glass expensive?

ANSWER: Because it is worth it!

If you buy any CURRENT Canon Body, it will be dated in 2 to 3 years and lose OVER 1/2 it's value.

If you buy most any of the Canon "L" lenses that sell for over $1,000 new, they will last you for years and still be worth a lot higher percentage of the value.

OK, Sharp Canon Lenses: 14mm, 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm 1.2 & 1.8, 135mm, 24-70L, 70-200L 2.8 IS and non-IS, 300mm 2.8 IS and non-IS, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm...

According to Photodo.com, it's the 200mm f1.8L which they no longer make..long story..

No other lens had as high of ratings of any other type of lens they tested of any brand.

I'd say it's hard to say... the 200 f1.8 is awesome... I once owned it.. but had to sell it because I got into a finnancial mess..

the 70-200 f2.8L isn't as sharp as the 135mm f2.0 which I can vouch for having both... the 100mm f2.8 Macro is very sharp too....amd so is the 85mm f1.2 up to f5.6...then it gets soft beyond that but from f2.0 to f5.6 it is awesome! ...but it is also the slowest focusing lens they make... a real snail.

The 70-200f2.8 L is still a darn good lens... but you can tell the difference side by side.. but by it's self,... it is a darn good lens..

I use primes over zooms for shooting with models...both in the studio and on location..

BTW, off topic.. I toured a friend's studio today,...and he uses the 20D body...and uses it on just fine jpg! He doesn't even use RAW....and he has 20x30 pics on his walls that look pretty darn good to me.. He applies some softening to the images...to match the look of the RZ67's with soft focus filters that he replaced with the 20D body! I was mentioning to him about shooting in RAW mode today,... he might be switching to that now..

Companies do stupid things.

At $5k a pop I doubt they were selling many of the 200/1.8, who knows their reasoning. I just know that when I rented it, I couldn't believe the detail I got out of it. It is one sweeet lense. If I ever have that much cash just laying around I'll definately pick one up (used, but HARD to find)

I'm not questioning the veracity of your statement; I'm just expressing amazement - it used to be the case that a line's prime macro was invariably the highest resolution lens of the line. That's no longer true? Or don't modern lines offer prime macros anymore?

Or is it that "highest resolution" is not the same as "sharpest"?

I fully expected to see debates on the merits of this macro versus that normal (also typically one of the sharpest offerings in a line), on how many stops down from wide were required, etc. I'm amazed about 200/1.8 vs 300 whatever! Have things changed that much?

According to the Canon Rep. who was in town a few months ago, she mentioned that they had to discontinue the production of the lens because of the process that was used to make certain glass elements found within the lens....lead elements... and because some of the elements were made of lead, they had to discontinue the way they were able to put that lens together which couldn't be the same as before. Apparently they felt the cost of making that lens was too great with all the environmental restrictions imposed on them by all these fruitcakes running around claiming that they are ruing the world with their lenses........well,... basically..
