Hey All,

Been a while since I have posted anyting. I have not taken a hiatus like some we know but, I am working on a new body of work that I am reluctant to share yet. My question is: how many of you shooters set a custom white balance? Particularly outside while shooting swimwear? Can you please share some custom wb images and tell me what time of day (roughly) it was ..ie..am pm 1 hr 2 hrs before the "golden hour" etc etc. Also, when shooting the golden hour..and you set a custom wb ..does it get rid of all of those glorious tones that we all love? (I have not tried this yet as I usually use my sunny setting but I think I am missing something) I am anticipating using warm cards since my s3 does not let me set an actual color temp (all of you canon shooters dont start!! Im working on it..lol). Also...who sets cwb shooting strobes?

Thanks
Michael

I set a custom WB probably 80% of the time, The other times I either pick a standard setting or just forget to set it at all. I shoot RAW files and generally check WB during post.

Fact is, most of my work is indoors and not glamour... most of what I shoot doesn't even move. I was just being chatty.

If you you check this link you'll see proofs of a shoot I did last week with hot lights and a custom white balance, be advised, it's boring...
www.alphabirds.com/TouchAmerica/2005-1/index.htm

You can still see variation in the color balance from shot to shot, We were in an old factory building (not a studio) and the power was poorly regulated. I got the call to do this at 8:00AM, we were shooting at 10:30 and done about 7:00P. They needed the finished images in 48 hours... Oy!

I'm finishing up an equally boring interior architecture shoot tomorrow AM on which I'll be using a custom WB. If your interested, you can compare it with the part I did today with WB on auto (see, I forgot).

Well, I may be different than a lot of folks, but my white balance is normally set on Auto 95% of the time while I'm shooting RAW. I'll set the WB in post-production using Nikon's Capture. If I'm shooting JPEG for some reason, I MIGHT set a custom WB if I'm shooting under stadium, gym, classroom or flourescent lights. But that happens so rarely...

I took a tip from Rolando on this one. I set my wb on my canon at 6000k and underexpose by 1/2 to 1 stop. Love the skin tones. I kinda like my prints a little darker than some people do so it is perfect for me.

Shot at mid day full sun with a canon 550ex fill, set at-2

More from that photo series

I usually shoot RAW and adjust WB in post processing. If shooting jpeg outdoors I keep my WB at 6000K.
