I've heard some complaints about them being a pain to assemble and take apart, but that isn't my experience. I have the 47" Octobox that I use in studio and it seems nice quality to me. Mine assembled easily in 5 minutes. I haven't taken it apart since then, but I don't see any quality issues. I use it with both my AB1600 and AB800.

You can read all you want over on the DP Review lighting technique forum. Interesting group over there. Ummm, interesting.

YMMV.

I would not buy anything else but a Larson Soft Box. JUST MY OPION !!! Larson boxes are guarenteed for life, at least that is what the reptold me. He will replace it when it rips or anything. They have a good "hot spot" in the middle of the box for feathering.

Again this is my opinion. But check it out for yourself.

I bought the medium Octabox a year ago and have had no problems...I liked it so much that I bought the larger one about 6 mos ago. I use them on my 800's and have had no problems at all with them.

I've got a medium and a large, and they both seem durable enough and work for me.

Speedrings are no problem, all the manufacturers make the appropriate rings for Alien Bees so you can use any softbox you desire. I also have a Westcott softbox for my bees.

I believe that Balcar and Alien Bees rings are interchangeable. If you look on BH's site, you'll find the charts for speedrings linked from the description of individual softboxes. For some reason I'm not able to copy and paste the link, but it should be easy to find.

For the money Alien Bee softboxes can not be beat. They are not hard to put together, but the directions suck. Once you do it the first time you will not have a problem. The material they use on the back of the boxes is thicker and tougher than any box I have owned, which is great for durability. Plus they all come with the collar. I do like a couple photogenic boxes because they have the gold foli interior which really puts out a nice warm light. But they are made like crap. If you are setting them up in the studio and never plan to move them fine, otherwise the AB stuff is awesome. Plus you cant beat the price.

The AB speed rings are a good deal, but the softboxes are a pain to put up and take down. It's not something you'd want to do all the time. I just ebay'd my last AB softbox. I'm going to get one that will accept a grid for more control.
