If glass and megapixels weren't an issue, which would you choose?

I'm particularly interested in color accuracy, saturation and noise.

Compare the major reviews and you'll see that the Canon 20D comes out on top against the D70. So, if you have no investiment in Nikon lens already, the 20D would be a good choice.
Cheers,
rfs

I'm a Nikon guy but I work with photos from tons of different cameras. I have to say the image quality difference, not just because of the insignificant extra 2mp, is enormous. to say nothing of many more features. it's 20D all the way

That was really helpful to hear.

How does the 20D compare to the D1X?

Glass and megapixels aside, it still easy,.

And take this from someone who shoots NIkon

Canon 20d. Canon is on top of the digital game, plenty of accessories for the Canon digital cameras, newer technology then the D70 (which lets face it, it's on its way out the Nikon doors)

As for a feel, there is something about a body based on an N80 design I could like, and I have to admit a 20d feels awkward in your hands, but throw a vertical grip on there and its a nice familiar size and weight.

....forget logic, just go buy the Canon

I use a D1x, as I have for 3 years next month. I adore it.

Pro D1x: It has a much heavier build than the 20D. If you dropped both cameras on a sidewalk, the sidewalk would break the 20D and the D1x would break the sidewalk (slight hyperbole). The D1x has the built in portrait grip. It has superior metering by far (I don't care what Canon people tell you, Nikon's Color Matrix Meter is where it's at). Though three years old the D1x IS a pro camera vs. the 20D which was intended for a pro/sumer market level, so the focusing is slightly faster. I believe the D1x has a slight edge in color quality.

Pro 20D: 8 true megapixels. The 5.9mp of the D1x is actually interpolated, it has something like 2.7 true and the horizontal is doubled. So even when compared to the 10mp D1x output (available in Nikon NEF software), the 20D produces a gabillion times more detail. Though the color quality overall is slightly better on the D1x (subjective opinion), the tonal range is smoother on the 20D, meaning if you took a picture of a gradient from 0 Black to 255 White with both cameras, the 20D would look smoother. The image quality and detail rendition of this camera are impossible to beat unless you want the D2x or 1DsII ($5000 or $8000). If you're travelling, this camera is a ton lighter. An important one: it's got newer circuitry and software, it writes/reads to memory cards MUCH faster, and can also use cards over 2GB which the D1x cannot.

Overall, the D1x being 4 years old and its replacement the D2x having already come out, I'd say if you can find one in good shape on eBay for less than the price of a new 20D, you might not be missing much, but if it were me I'd buy the 20D.

Of course, I'm buying a D2x, but that's just me.

If Canon L Glass, MP, 5fps frame rate, metal construction, Vertical grip option, Photoshop CS RAW processing with Canon RAW images, image latitude, limited noise, all the colour tone adjustments, weren't an issue, there would be nothing to compare.. LOL... the D70 vs the 20D ...LMAO!!

iso 100, iso 3200, 5 fps, 2.5 more MP, better RAW processing in PS CS, faster review times, scrolling 10x zoom back LCD for 1369.00 brand new with a 1 year Canon warranty vs 2000.00 used..buy as is.. lighter body...hmm better colour tone adjustments.. long battery life.....did I forget anything?? Oh, a B&W mode,..

the 20D is better..

Canon. Hands down a great camera. A little noisey but a great camera. I've owned the D30, D60, 10D and now the 20D. I have to say Canon is doing a great job listening to its customers and thier tech is getting better in leaps and bounds. Love the L glass
