Nikon Digital Camera Recomendations
Ok, I'm seriously considering going digital, finally. I'm a Nikon man, while I know Cannon as usual, gives Nikon a run for it's money, I want a Nikon, so please no recommendations outside of Nikon. It looks like the D70 or the D100 is in my price range, but any other reccomendations are welcome. If you could, please let me know an approximate price range, I know that prices vary from place to place. I'm looking for a kit, a lense, memory card, and any other accesories needed to start. Thanks in advanced.

Re: Nikon Digital Camera Recomendations
I don't know what your time frame is for making a decision, but the current buzz is that Nikon will be updating the D70 and releasing it as the D70s. Nikon's UK website announced an end of April launch for what it is calling "successor to the Nikon D70"

There have been links posted on other forums to leaked copies of the D70s manual The leaked manual, if real indicate is that it will have a 2" LCD screen ( D70 1.8"), a 1500mAh LiIon battery and new charger (D70 1400mAh) , and a Wired shutter release with the MC-DC1 and IR shutter release (D70 IR only).

There is also rumour or speculation (or a combination of both) from a Chineese website, saying that production of the D70 is soon to be stopped as will be restocking of the D70. It also states that the D70s will use the same metering and AF systems as the Nikon D2 series. Also it supposedly will have have a lowest ISO equivalent of 100 ( D70 200), the electronic shutter will be replaced with a Mechanical shutter Max shutter speed of 1/4000 (D70 1/8000).

I cannot cofirm anything about the D70s, but it may be worth waiting a few weeks to see what Nikon announces and what the D70s actually has and then do the compare with the D100.

Nikon did a $100 price drop on the D70. I have heard of the D70 Kit (Body and 17-70mm f/3.5-4.6 ED-IF AFS DX) for about $1000.

I went back and forth on the D70 vs. D100 before I bought. There were trade offs with each, but it ultimately came down to the price difference. I am very happy with my D70 as it does everything that I need it do. Your mileage may vary.

Good Luck,

Re: Nikon Digital Camera Recomendations

A Boston dealer has the D-70 Kit - with 18-70 F/3.5-4.5 lens for $1199.95, plus Nikon is giving a $100.00 rebate.

I don't think any Digital SLRs come with a memory card, just like you NEVER get free film with a good SLR. I just paid $124 for a Lexar 1GB, 80x card. That is about a third what they were selling for a year or so ago.

You might also contact the GG Member who sells. He may have a good deal, as well.

If you already have Nikon glass, this is a good deal. Watch out, though, 'Cause I predict the next 2 or 3 responses to your post will be from Canon Hounds who will want to to change brands. Frankly, I changed from Canon to Nikon when Canon made the first of several lens mount changes -- never looked back.

Nikon Rebates:

Don't forget an extra battery.

You may also wish to consider the Fuji Finepix S2 Pro or (more expensive and newly released) S3 Pro. The Fuji DSLR's mount Nikon lenses.

Re: Nikon Digital Camera Recomendations
My first DSLR was/is a D70.

I have been and am thrilled with it's performance and features, not one complaint after 6000+ images.

The D70 is newer and faster. Suggest not getting kit lens but buy the 28-200mm 3.5-5.6 for the same price and is even shorter. -Jim

Re: Nikon Digital Camera Recomendations
So far, it sounds like the D70 is the better camera. Of course I'm still open to hear more, but I'll take it from here.

The Fuji has a Nikon lens mount, and the S2 price is down to $1500 or so.

Re: Nikon Digital Camera Recomendations

Fuji has a nice little promotion for the S3 right now....

However, the D70 sounds like it is in your price range and a nice camera to make the jump to digital......

You may think about the Fuji S2 with some good deals floating around right now.....

Stay far far away from the D100.....Get that thought out of your head rigbt now.....

Ok JT. Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but what's so bad about the D100?
