I have an Epson 1280 and after about 100 sheets of Premium Photo Glossy paper and a few ink cartridges, I finally got decent results dialed in for my monitor/printer. I also discovered that black-only printing on heavy matte paper gives me good b+w prints.

I stumbled on some Premium Luster paper yesterday for just $10 for a 50/pack. Figuring that it was Epson paper, with an Epson printer, using Epson inks, I'd be able to get a good print "out of the box". But guess what? I don't have a paper option for "Premium Luster" in my printer settings.

So here's the big question - what paper options and settings work best for you and your 1280??

Ed,

Good morning. I am happy with my 1280 B&W prints with the black ink only on the heavtweight matte paper also. I do a lot of 11X14 borderless.
On your question, I have the paper in front of me and for settings they tell us to use "Premium Semigloss". They may have that driver for download at Epson, but in lieu of that I just use Premium Glossy Photo Paper setting.

BTW, do you use the "Properties" option, enhance, people setting? I now use it after reading about it in one of the mags some time ago...maybe our Joe Farace mentioned it...do not remember.

Ed,

Happy to hear you are getting in to the digital world full throttle...

As for the issue at hand...

On my 2200, if I have Matte Black in the printer I get all paper options...
If I have Photo Black in the printer I only have the gloss paper options...

May be the same case for the 1280...

Good Luck...

Chris

I don't know how relevant this will be to you, but here goes:

I recently purchased an Epson 1280 for the express purpose of turning it into a dedicated B&W printer. I'm using the PiezographyBW icc system from www.inkjetmall.com. The inks are pure B&W pigments (and archival), not dyes like the Epson cartridges. It's a bulk ink system that allows you to refill individual inks as they are used up. It's also a good way to turn your $300 Epson 1280 into a $1000 Epson 1280, but the results are absolutely **stunning**.

I purchased a few sample paper packs and have, at this point, narrowed my choice down to 2 papers: Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 188 gsm and Bradford Rag - Bright White 250. You should be able to use them with the regular Epson inks, but I don't have any experience with that particular combination.

well I had a 1280 and used the Epson premium glossy and was pretty happy with the results.

I sold my 1280 a few weeks ago and got a R1800 and love it.

I have a 50 pack of Epson 11" x 14" Matte Paper-heavyweight, that works with the 1280 but NOT with the R1800, wanna do a swap for you Luster paper? If yours is worth more I don't mind adding some dough?????

I read your post last, but I upgraded to a R1800 and have a new pack (It's opened but I don't actually think I printed any from the box) of the 1x14 Epson Matte Paper-Heaveyweight that I might wnat to sell if Ed doesn't want to trade me his Luster paper for it. It won't work with the R1800.

would you be interested?

I'm in Orange County...
