Yes yes, I would love to see the steps to create that.
I'm wanting to do something like that for my wedding invitations.
Could you PM me with the steps, that would be very cool.
Thanks a lot

First I should say this was an accidental effect I stumbled into while just playing around with this shot of my soul-mate, Beth. The image came from a late night, covert shoot in a historic home I was shooting for the owner.

The techniques and tools I used were:
- The Path Tool (Pen Tool) to do most of the selection work... this image is all about selection with the path tool, everything else is basic colorization.
- Alpha channels made from paths and from the magic wand tool.
- Image calculations to combine and differentiate the alpha channels.
- Layers in which I filled selections with color and changed the blending mode.

1) I started by wanting to remove the background which was a combination of dark windows and light wall. The only decent way to do the selection was with the path (pen) tool. If you don't have the pen tool in your arsenal, you need it, it's a pain to learn but once you have it down you can select anything with an edge. So I precisely selected her outline, cutting a wide outline around her hair, and saved the path as an alpha channel.

2) Then was the hardest part, selecting her hair from the window and frame background. I used the magic wand with a variety of preset tolerances... it was a little tedious but I've since learned some more refined techniques. Some sections of her hair were fully shadowed and some were reflecting the lights. I saved two alpha channels of her hair; one of the reflective highlights and one of the shadows.

3)Ok, so cool, I've gotten rid of the background and I play around with some different ideas picking up the colors of her clothing and making gradients and stuff. While I'm doing that I decide I want to change the color of the dress to red, so I select it using the path tool and save it as an alpha channel. Then I made a new layer and activated the alpha channel 'Dress' as a selection. I filled the selection with red and changed the blending mode to 'Overlay' (I think, I'm looking for the original right now). Then I adjusted the layer opacity to reveal some of the original image on the Background layer.

4) I basically repeated those steps for each element I wanted to colorize... underwear, shoe soles, shoe straps, lips, hair highlights, hair shadows, skin, etc.

That's pretty much it. I selected every element I wanted to colorize except the hair using the path tool. I changed the path to a selection via alpha channel and color filled the selection on it's own layer with the blending mode set to Overlay trimming back the layer's opacity so some of the orginal image showed through to give it form.
I'm looking for the original files now so you can see a before and after but tonight I gotta go.

Feel free to email me at chip@alphabirds.com
