This will probably be a silly question, but how can you view D70 NEF files in Windows explorer...and I know Windows is part of the problem. I'm shooting NEF and jpg just so that I can view the images quickly in Windows Explorer without having to open each with Photoshop or using the little viewer from File-open. I'd rather just go NEF if I could get a bigger thumbnails.

Thanks.

Takes a little registry tweaking.. here's the destructions..

Israel

----------------------------------
- Run Regedit

- Under this registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nef

Create this key (note there are two levels of keys):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nef\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

and set the default (unnamed) value to:
{3F30C968-480A-4C6C-862D-EFC0897BB84B}

If you have Adobe CS, make sure you get the free RAW converter update from their website, and you can open the NEF files as thumbnails in Adobe PS's own browser (before conversion - that's the point). I'm always a little reluctant to mess with the Registry, unless I get better instructions....

In addition to the helpful people here, you may want to check out www.nikonians.org . It is a site dedicated to Nikon equipment and has a forum specifically for the D70.

Andy,

I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt as to their skill sets. I trust that people will ask if they need more assistance.

The registry settings that I have posted have been tested on over a dozen machines without any issues. Before I posted my reply to the original message I actually removed that registry key and verified that I no longer had thumbnails. I then put it back and verified I had my thumbnails back.

Thanks,
Israel

Don,

Nikon has released a fix for this problem with WinXP SP2 computers.. It's called the NEF Thumbnail Updater.

You can download it at Nikon NEF Thumbnail Updater . It is in the form of a program installation but comes complete with click-by-click instructions.

I did a before and after check with one of my computers. It does the same thing as my previous recommendation but doesn't require you to edit the registry manually.

Thanks,
Israel

OK, I'm game. I see your other post about the progam version of this, but that brings up two questions: 1) For either method, do I need to have the Nikon camera software or Adobe RAW converter installed somewhere, or does the Windows Explorer just do this on its own? 2) If I choose the program install version, do I need to have SP2 installed? I've been avoiding it because I've heard nothing but negative things about it. I have two XP Pro machines, don't need them screwed up this month.

Thanks,

The problem that is fixed with the patch to Windows XP SP2 is specific to SP2.

The original version of XP, as well as XP SP1, correctly decoded the NEF files and would display the thumbnails as they should be. Microsoft changed a couple of things in SP2 that made the thumbnails no longer decode properly, and the patch merely restores that ability.

So, if you have Windows XP or XP SP1, you should be able to see the NEF thumbnails without doing anything other than selecting "Thumbnails" in the VIEW.

There's been a lot of information posted in response to your question... I think a couple of questions should have been asked, first, before anyone suggests you go mucking around with the registry.

What version of Windows are you running?

If you are using Windows ME, XP or XP (Home or Professsional) with Service Pack 1, then all you have to do is select "Thumbnails" in the VIEW portion of your folder and the NEFs should be displayed correctly.

If you have XP with Service Pack 2 installed, look through the thread for the updater pointed to by Ilsassi. That leads you to a Nikon web site that has the updater in a .zip file that you merely double click to install. But, know that it works only for XP (either Home or Professional) with SP2 installed.

If you're using Windows 98 or 95 - sorry... it ain't a happening deal.

That help?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and insights. I will test them out tonight. In answer to Wayne, I'm running XP SP2, thankfully not Windows 9x.

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.
