Hi,

I am planning to invest on a digital SLR. Is Nikon D70 a good camera for glamour photography? Or should I go for a high end like Nikon D2X? These things are getting improved every 3 months or so (just like computers). Is it worth to invest on a high end DSLR which would be almost 'out of date' after a few months?

There are rumors (mostly in internet) that Nikon is ready to release a newer model to replace D70. Should I wait, at least, until that happens (or should I take advantage of the big rebates they offer for D70)?

Thanks for your ideas in advance!

Ok, This is sure to start the nikon against Canon fight. But here is my view.. I own a Nikon but if I had to do it all over I would go with a Canon.. They are both good Camera companys but I think Nikon is falling behind in the Digital SLR world.

I have to agree with Mike. I've shot with Olympus, Nikon and Canon. I own 3 Canons. They seem to be on the cutting edge.

Either the Mamiya ZD or Hasselblad H1D. Pricey though, $12.5K (Mamiya) or $20K (Hasselblad). Oh, and they're not exactly available yet.

I too would go with one of the Canon models. I use the Canon 20D and it gives outstanding results. I've played with the Nikons also, but found the Canon to work more efficiently.

Cheers,

you can afford, buy a camera that is two to three times that amount. I know nothing about your talent so if the images don't improve at least you now have the "big gun" bragging rights to compensate.

Dan,

In direct answer to your question (as opposed from all these other prostelitizing folks who are trying to get you to buy into something else)....

The D70 is an OK camera, as many D70 shooters will attest. It's been out a little over a year, which means that, if Nikon continues their normal trend, there'll probably be an equivalent that's new and improved within another year or two.

Most of the rumors right now center around a replacement for the D100.. maybe showing up in the next six to nine months or so.

The D70 can't really be compared to the D2X, though.. the D2X is much higher technology at four times the price. If you had the money, the D2X is the current 'best bet' in the Nikon line.

The question you have to answer for yourself is whether you can take the psychological question of "do I have to have the latest and greatest" and subdue that enough to use 'an almost out of date' camera to produce fine images, or not. Some people have to have the new toy. Me? I'm still shooting with an 'out of date' D100, and not looking back.

Two other alternatives, between the D70 and D2X, would be the D2H and D2HS....

Wayne

Dan,

I shoot with D100's, I looked at the D70, as a backup but went with another D100, mainly because of the battery pac that can be added which also allows me to shoot vertically with ease. I don't think you can go wrong with the D70, no matter when you decide something else will come along sooner than you expected and at a lower price. With digital you just need to take the plunge and decide what features are important to you. I've stayed with Nikon because of the array of lenses that I've invested in. And who really knows what the next technological breakthrough will be , right now alot of people are chasing the maximun number of pixels, but 6 megs meets the needs for everything I'm doing at the present time.

I am leaning towards a Nikon. Main reason is that I've got some Nikkor lenses already. However, I don't mind getting into Canon, but I have to be convinced that they are significantly better than Nikon DSLR's (at least some critical features).

Thanks for all your ideas.. I am reading this thread once in every 2hrs or so.

Do you have a film system? If not, you may want to consider the Minolta 7D. The best viewfinder out there, in-camera image stabilization, great handling, very low noise even at high ISO, and wireless ttl.

Limited to 6mp though, not that I think that's a big deal, and a bit pricey compared to others in this category (Paying for in camera image stabilization).

If you don't already have lenses for another camera, you should give it a look...

Bottom line, all of the current crop from manufacturers are great cameras, mostly comes down to personal preference. HTH...
