You talk of getting lights, but I hope you have or are considering a good flash meter to go with it.
It will definately be helpful when setting up lighting ratios and such.
With a flash meter you can use a good on camera flashes shot into an umbrella for similar results. They can be triggered by slave units.
I personally bought an 800 Alien bee(Beginner Bee) and use a Sunpak PZ5000 into an umbrella. Works pretty good.

I agree completely. A good flash meter is essential to getting good exposures. I have had several and am fond of my Sekonic L-308 as an entry level flash meter.
