Wheeling and dealing just seems like it's part of photography, especially when it comes to the tools, so I know you all have found some excellent buys out there. What acquisition put the biggest smile on your face?

I had to ask because I just found mine. I just got a 5000ws (not a typo and they're actual, not "effective") Balcar system with two heads off 'bay in working but pretty "appreciated" condition for $350 ($0.07/ws). Wait, it gets better. I call the guy to ask him a couple of questions after the auction. Turns out he got 9 Balcar packs and 6 heads in a lot at an auction and all he really wanted was something else in the lot. So he sold them off two heads per pack (I got the last set), so he was going to have 6 packs left over. To be fair he said not all of them worked, but he offered to send me a working spare for just the shipping and he was going to junk the rest. So the spare's in the mail for an extra $20. Damn! To be honest, I don't know what you do with 5000ws, but damned if I'm not going to find out! Atleast you can dial it down to 300, and it uses bee/lightning reflectors. I doubt I'll ever beat this deal.

"I love the sound of strobes popping in the morning - sounds like victory." -apologies to Coppola.

Got a perfect condition Sekonic 608L Light Meter that sells everywhere for nearly $700 for $350 off of Buy-it-now on ebay, then when the guy was a little late on shipping (just a day or two) he refunded me another $15...

I've not made the leap to digital yet but my best deal was just recently. I picked up a used but well cared for EOS 1N with the BE-1 booster pack, Minolta Auto meter, 70-210mm lens and cases, manuals and caps for $200 (did I say they were all in very good condition?)oh, I also picked up three professional stage scoop lights (750w ea.) for $80 Not bad, I dont think so!

Four light Brownline Speedotron system bought just two weeks before with all the warranty cards unfilled, two large sofboxes, barn door, snoot, reflectors, 2 unbrellas, stands, case, grid set - $500 for the works.

Went to the ATM and paid the guy (a colleague) cash right there. He even delivered - no charge!

Nice! I got an auto pole with this auction too. Balcars had this odd idea to put a clamp on the side of their uber packs and include an auto pole for a built-in lightstand kinda thing.

Awesome! Which brownline pack did you get? Reminds me of my first light kit I got off 'bay: Novatron 440hdx, 5 heads (3 working), lightstands, barndoor, snoot. $250. Still use it.
