Sounds like a GodZirrrrra movie!! Anyway I just blew a Flash tube on my JTL 160..Jtl tells me its cheaper to buy a new head instead of replacing the flash tube which you have to send to them to have replaced...so JTL sounds like Disposable $110.00 light...now the big debate...the Novatrons are cheaper than Alien Bees...someone care to talk me into one or the other? JTL just buried themselves in my book...HELP!! Im down and out on shooting...so I need quick advice.
Don!

IMO here and I am no expert but this months Popular Photography has an article extolling the virtues of Alien Bees. However; in light of a recent post regarding our favorite photography magazine, I do find it hard to tell where the articles stop and the ads begin. Check it out.

I've used both quite a bit. I bought my first Novatron powerpack and 4 heads back in the late 70's. They still work just fine even after numerous falls of the heads to the floor. So they are solidly built. But the Alien Bees are so much more convenient to use. With the ability to set each head independantly over a 5 stop range, you have a power to setup lighting ratios that far surpasses what you can do with the Novatrons. Also the much faster recycle times are great. And should you break a flash tube it costs just a few dollars to replace the tube. So I'd go with the Alien Bees.
Cheers,
rfs

they're both good. i have two novatron m300 monolights and i like them quite a bit, especially the ability to fire at full or half power and dial up or down the power in either mode. the slave works great on them. recycle time is fast enough for me. i'm probly gonna get a m500 which is fan cooled. my main problem with the alien bees are they're too cute. they're like "chick" lights. the novatron's are definitely manlier. hehehhehe

Hello!

I've only used one system in my brief photo career - Alien Bees.

So I can't compare them - but I can speak as to how I like them.

I LOVE them!!! Simple, easy, powerful, affordable, modular. etc.

Go wit' da Bee!

The BEES!

Modeling light can be purchased at home depot or anywhere else you can buy a 150watt halogen bulb. Flash tube can be changed by yourself. They are a self contained unit. No pack needed to plug them into so if one light goes out you can still shoot with the other light or lights if you have more than one. They also have a built in cooling fan and many other features. I have been using them for 3 years now and love em'
