What is the difference if any? I have used both with my 10D w/o any problems, one came with the G2 I bought before the 10d. I read somehwere that the life of the batteries is about 18 months so I need to get some more as back up. Will an off brand 1800ma, made in Japan, work just as well? Opinions and any persoanl experience with non OEM batteries appreciated.

I have been using an off brand 511 in my Digital Rebel for months without a problem. It is 1300ma instead of 1100 of the OEM 511...I would not go for 1800, but that is just me.

Luis

I just replaced the BP511 in my G1. I searched Amazon and found the BP511A. It's an updated replacement for the BP511 from Canon. More ma and cheaper. It was half way between the cost of a new Canon BP511 and an off brand.

I've got the one 511 that came with my 10D and 2 of the "off brands". The only difference I see between them is the cost.

I have the one that came with my 10D as well as 2 off brands from e-bay. The only difference I see is that the off brands last longer the the Canon.

I use 1 canon battery that came with by 10D (so its about 2 years old) and all the rest are after market batteries for which I paid $11.95 each. They are 1800 mAh. They work just fine, except they last too long so I don't get as many opportunities to change batteries, which I miss. Since the Canon batteries have less mAh and cost 3 to 5 times as much, its a no brainer as to which to buy. They have different designations for what is essentially the same battery, bp511, 12, 11a, etc.
Cheers,

i have two batteries of 1400 ma each. it was great swapping them out while i was in (frozen) germany last winter, but now i noticed that one is always dying out after a few minutes even though fully charged while the other is okay and lasting for its normal duration. has anyone else experienced this problem? also, if you're getting cheaper offbrands w/o any problems, can you tell me where you're getting them? i'd like to replace it and here (Spain) i cant find a battery for less than 50 euros, which is well OVER a decent price... feel free to email me an URL if you want to.

thanks!!!

While I have not run into this problem, I suggest, not just in this case, but in most cases like this, that you stick with what you know as fact works. There ain't no reason to suffer from the headaches caused by a battery not working or cutting out during a shoot of any sort, the battery screwing up your camera, or just not fitting at all. In my book, buying the more expensive battery that you know will work in your camera is worth the extra money. Get a second one while you're at it.

Well,....so far so good for the most part..

I believe the off brand batteries are more "quirky"..than the Canon batteries....although, I have never sat down to compare them..

The new 511A type seem to have a shorter life than the older 511 batteries.....perhaps because they hold 25% longer charge..(when new).. I don't really know....just speculating here..

I've purchased 12 batteries for the Canon 20D and 10D over the last several years. All but the 2 of these came from SterlingTek and I paid $11.95 each. They are the 1800 mha ones and they last longer than the two Canon batteries I have. I have never had a spot of problem with any of them. All of them are still working. The first 5 include 2 Canon and 3 SterlingTek batteries. They all seem to still hold a full charge. It makes no sense to pay $50 plus for one of these batteries because for that price you can get 4 of the OEM batteries.
Cheers,
