Here is my dilema on this one. I have JTL Veralights and just picked up my JTL Mobilight. JTL apparently doesnt make a beauty dish. Does anyone know if there is another beauty dish that will fit the JTL lights or do you know anyone that can modify another brand to fit the JTL lights? Any help would be appreciated.

While I don't have the answer to your question, I do have some information that might be useful to you. I once tried to adapt a Norman 22" reflector to fit a Balcar strobe. It didn't work because the Balcar strobe wouldn't fit far enough into the reflector. The Balcar flash tube is recessed into the face of the strobe housing and the Norman flash tube is mounted forward of the reflector mount. The Norman flash tube is entirely inserted into the beauty dish. Balcar and white lightning mounts are roughly the same, but I am not certain that a White Lightning beauty dish would work on a Balcar head for the same reason. The only good way to find out is to try them.

Novatron makes a 16" dish that works fairly well as a Beauty Dish. I have two so I modified one to have a white surface and I build a center piece so that it doesn't have a hots spot. I just went and tried it on my Mobilight 300s and it fits nicely. You would need to figure a way to hold it in place but I think that gaffers tape might even work.

I can take shots of it all if you want to see how it fits...

Mola Lights

Try them and they might be able to custom make a bracket to fit your JTL mono lights.

so you're saying the novatron dish is not a true beauty dish and requires customizing? even to work as a beauty dish on novatron monolights?

It's a 16" dish. I'm not sure of the true definition of a Beauty Dish but it seems to serve the purpose. The modifications were done to make it serve my purpose. If I use it the way Novotron designed it, the results are very similar.

Generally only higher-end strobe lines have such goodies as beauty-dishes and ring flashes, but of course maybe somebody here knows if one can be adapted, modified, etc without a whole machine shop.

However, it should be noted that an umbrella is much the same thing. Not as light efficient, and without the feeling of "intensity" in the light, and not as perfectly smooth and even because an umbrella is always going to be hotter in the center. However, as a poor man's fix it does fulfill the same purpose. A beauty dish is really little more than a very expensive, high intensity, highly efficient and smooth, even umbrella.

Just as a shoot-through white umbrella is a poor-man's soft box.

Even though I have (and love) ring flashes and beauty dishes, there are shoots on location where all the heavy gear just isn't practical, and I'll break out the umbrellas and simulate a Chimera or a beauty dish and while the effect isn't quite the same it is similar.

As always, it's always the photography (the vision and the idea as well as the technique) that makes the photograph more than the gear.

You'll notice that every brand of beauty dish for every line of strobes is just a little bit different. The reason is the spread/spill of light that comes out of the flashtube, optimizing it through the mount to get the right coverage and intensity. And this is a slight problem you might have even if you machined say a Profoto dish to mount to an Alien Bee head or whatever. Not to say that it wouldn't work quite well, but the PRECISE effect would no doubt be different.

I'm guessing because I don't know the Novatron line that well, but the Novatron probably wasn't designed originally as a beauty dish (an umbrella-type reflector) but probably as a wide angle reflector, which is a sort of barebulb source.
