Everyone raves about fresnel spots, but they're wicked expensive. Generally around $1k. So I got an idea to make my own and after some web searching saw that it was not an impossible project. I went on Ebay and won me a 6" Altman fresnel light for about $40. It was a little rough and definately smelled the the ceiling of a club! First I ripped it apart and drilled out the pop rivets holding the bulb fixture in it. Then out came the dremel. I cut a hole in the reflector big enough for my novatron barebulb head and drilled a hole for a 1/4" screw to hold it in place. I also had to cut part of the back out to get the cable through. Right now the movements are minimal, maybe 1" and no room for a modeling light, but if I cut out more of the back I could probably increase it to 3-4" of movement. Here's what it looks like:

Here's an image made with the light:

There's also a back/side light camera right in this image that used barndoors and a "ghetto grid". A ghetto grid is a piece of flourescent light fixture gridding (available at HomeDepot) cut down and clamped to a light. They're no honeycomb grids, but they help. If you're going to make one of these, us anvil shears and not bypass, bypass cutters make a big mess. You should be able to get 8 grids or so out of one piece, which makes them about 1$ each.

Looks like you figured out your own set up for lighting. Home made engineering. Lights that work made cheaper by do-it-yourselfers. Here are a set of hot lights that I put together using 500 watt lights with camera tripods and some metal fabrication to mount them with. I put a diffusion panel in front of them to soften the light. As of this week there will be an added professional strobe from Alien Bees in my assortment of lighting.

$29 a piece in this set of lights.

And a sample of what was shot with them.

Now that you have that, try some of the old Hollywood B/W stuff. It has a very short shadow edge transfer. I wish I had one. Have fun.

She has never been photographed before except for her senior pic's. I didn't do them. I will ask her if she minds me passing her name on. She about 5'11" tall. here's another pic from the same sitting. I wasn't too proud of the shoot but we will try again.
