Just got one.
Would like to hear stories
of your first experience
using the D1.

I loved the D1 from the first time I used it. The noise is pretty bad at the higher ISO's, but at 200 & 400 - it's great. If your colors don't seem to pop - there's a little trick that might help. If you open your image in Photoshop - assign the color profile as NTSC - then convert the color profile to your working space. It will usually bring your colors to life. I heard that the NTSC profile was what they were using when it was designed - not sure if that's true or not - but doing the above in photoshop seems to help. The only problems I ever had with my D1 bodies was the lousy bettery life. I'd carry 4 or 5 batteries with me. I'm glad the batteries last longer on the new cameras.

John,

I shot this image with a Minolta X-700, 1000 iso film, 135mm lens,
shutter speed at 125 and a 2x extender behind the lens.
It stinks...don't it ?

That leaves me to hope I can shoot this D1 at a high shutter speed
and a low ISO.

Do you shoot in raw or jpeg format ?

Battery life is a major concern !
We can take an arsenal of "eveready" battries with us on a shoot,
but when we depend on a certain size and shape rechargable battery...
we are left to the whims of a battery. I don't like that.

I hope the batteries have improved.

Tom

Ahh yes,...the D1,...a decent camera if you are good with manual focus skills.. and enjoy the strange hues it produces with skin tones... Yes, I remember this camera when it first came out,...it revolutionized the editorial and photojournalistic industry with it's substandard performance.. They were the first somewhat better than crappy digital SLR camera to hit the market under 5k....and make great paper weights today! Yep, the paper I worked at bought several of those for their nikon lens owning photographers.. I bought the D30.....although slower in performance and not nearly as rugged, it out performed the D1 in terms of image quality so much that it was obvious which shots were taken with my D30 and which ones were from their D1 bodies..

Oh well, enjoy your camera anyway! BTW, Nikon is releasing the updated version of the D2H...which is going for 2500.00......which is light years better than the original D1!!
