Not sure what camera you have, but I would take a 85 f1.4, 50 f1.4, and a 70-200 f2.8 VR. Shot a school play last night with the 70-200 f2.8 VR. ASA 1600, f2.8, 1/10 to 1/250 of a second. Need a fast shutter for dancing, so I'd get the fastest lens you can and sit near the front.

If you're trying to do this right (and by renting a lens it sounds like you are), you're probably gonna need more lens than one. There's not a good, fast enough zoom I can think of that will cover absolutely everything you probably want in this case.

That brings up a point about covering events. You a baseball fan? If so you know as well as I do just how well big-leaguers can hit the same fastball over and over in batting practice. If they're expecting it, they can jump all over it. The problem in games, of course, is they face a major-league pitcher with major-league stuff who isn't so obliging. They work the whole plate going inside, going outside, breaking balls, changing speeds, etc. No one with less than superhuman vision could pick up the spin on the ball and react fast enough to get good wood on much more than 30% of them, and that's in the case of those of all-star caliber who have abilities that far exceed ours. Big league hitters have to choose their pitches, looking to get good wood on the good pitches that they do see. Am I making my point? So it must be with the event photographer.

Look for moments in the event that are good for wide establishing shots, shots of the action, tight shots of the performers, etc and shoot accordingly. You don't need to get it all at once. And you'll probably find that it's virtually impossible to do it all and do it all well at every moment. Prepare yourself for each shot accordingly.

The very best event shooters over time develop a sort of sixth sense as to when something's about to happen, and they're ready and in position with the lens, the flash, the shutter speed, whatever they need to capture that moment the way they want to render it.

Thanks for the great advice, both you and everybody else who responded. I am going to try to scout the location in advance to get a feel for distances and lighting and then use your helpful comments to decide which if any lenses to rent.
