I will be buying my first set of lights for my home studio. I was wondering if anyone could help me. Kind to buy, Price, basic set-up, etc. I will be using mainly for Portrait and Boudoir Photography. Thanks!

Alien Bees Give you a lot of bank for the buck. I just bought a B-800 not long ago, it works great and it was pretty cheap. Paul C. Buff that makes Alien Bees and White Lightnings, back their equipment very well too.

I just picked up the "Beginner Bee".

I did upgrade to the 13 foot stand for an additional $30.
They don't recommend using a softbox on the provided stand.
I also substituted the silver/white umbrella for the white/black shoot through umbrella. No charge for that.

I also saved about $40 with the student discount.

Since I live near Nashville I stopped by their store.
What's funny is, one of the girls actually
had "Alien Antenna" on her head while taking phone orders.

Looks like a fun place to work.

Now if I had someone to shoot.

I think you missed an opportunity to shoot! What about a photo of a girl with "Alien Antenna" on her head?

Here are a couple grab shots of a recent alien encounter I had:

Your welcome. That was my problem too. If you want to check mine out before you decide to buy let me know. You can play around with the one I got to see what you think. Belleville isn't THAT far.

There was a thread about a paga back called "Alien Bees or Novos" which covered much of what you are asking. Once I can afford to spend the money, I want to get a set of three B800's And I'd like to have a couple of their smaller "Brolly Boxes" for location shooting. The B800 is rated at 320 "real" watt-seconds, which is a good choice for most locations. I had an opportunity to shoot with a couple of them in a lighting workshop and am impressed with their size, power, lightness and durability. There are better and more expensive lights around, but the bees are a good choice and the hold their resale value. You will seldom find any on Ebay. When you do, they will bring almost new price.

Hmmmm, I didn't even know they had an actual walk in store. Now that I think about it though, it makes sense. Next time I'm over in Nashville, I'm going to have to check it out.

I love mine. I bought the larger brolly box with it. It works very well for the way I'm using it. The 800 puts out an amazing amount of light. I usually have to cut it down to 1/2 or sometimes even 1/4 power shooting through the brolly box at about 8 feet from the model.
