black & white films and hardening fixers question

Just out of curiosity, why not Rapid Fix?

What about for something like the new tech films -- wouldn't you'd need a rapid fixer or run into lengthy fixing times?

Do different fixers produce different results, or in other words, affect the quality of the negative at all?
