Is B/W a personal preference or is there a time when it should be used over color?

I just shot some actor's headshots yesterday, and those always seem to be BW, although I think it's just convention, not absolutely required.

On the subjective side, I like BW for skin a lot. It seems to capture the subect with less distraction. I also find it more challenging to post-process.

I think it all comes down to your own artistic expression. My personal feeling is that color teases the senses with it's vast array of color. Black and white concentrates more on texture and emotion. Again, just my opinion. I use B&W very often for Artistic Nudes and shots where I want to force an emotional reaction. I'm finding this hard to describe. I guess that it all comes down to you as the artist - which you prefer to convey the feeling you want to with the shot.

Love your photo. Her eyes seem to draw you in. Everything seems to fit.
Here are two I couln't decide on.
Maybe change the color of them all together?

I like the second one. Nice contrast and texture. I think the first one might look better in color, since the shadows are less dramatic. Personal preference though.

Hi Mark A,

When I saw your photo, the first thought that went throught my head was WOW. Not very professional but it spoke to the soul.
Thank you
