I know this seems to be a dumb question but I have to ask it. I noticed that a lot of the pics on line can be downloaded to your computers. What do I need to do to protect my work from being downloaded printed from a CD or from the net. tommymc

Tommy, I asked the same question a year ago and I was told if you don't want it copied then don't put it on the net. There is really no way around not getting it copied that I know of. [image]www.fantasiesimage.com/purpleblue3.jpg[/image]

quick answer... all images you see online with your browser are downloaded to your computer. Any image you see in your browser.. is now on your computer at least until other things take place. such as clearing your browser's cache.

You do not have to right click and save it, you do not have to click it to save it.. your browser downloads it and it is in the cache.

As others will tell you.. if you put it on the web.. and people see it.. it is in their computer.

I don't have much to add that hasn't been said, except:

1) You do want you images to be seen, so how are you hurt if you post them? Unless you have a contractual obligation to not disseminate them, it's to your benefit to get them out there.

2) One way to make it difficult to copy the images is to embed them in a flash movie. Not perfect, but it eliminates the "right click and save" crowd.

I'll just add that while you can't keep them from being copied, saved, and potentially passed around the net (if nothing else, saving the image as a screenshot will do that), you can effectively keep them from being printed. If your image is at 72ppi, and fairly small (I usually limit my web images to 500 or 600 pixels on the long side), and embed your copyright notice at a fairly good size, maybe across some critical area, and use as low of a JPG compression setting as you can without the image falling apart, you are certainly limiting how large and how well it can be printed on paper. I personally have far more trouble with people scanning my stuff from printed calendars and magazines than I do with online theft, and there's nothing to be done about that. Also remember to register your copyight so that if it happens to be stolen for some big bucks purpose, you have an easier time of pursuing legal action.
