I was just wondering if I should buy the Kodak DCS SLR, or the Canon EOS 20D.
I have been using the older Mamiya 645’s for years and have been very pleased with the results. Since the digital camera revolution it has become harder and harder to find labs that want to work with Med format film anymore. Also it would be nice to see what I shoot when I shoot it.
The reason I started looking at the Kodak was for the quality of medium format in a digital.
Most of my work is high school reunions, daycare, and youth sports photography. Any comments would be helpful. At this point I am on overload with reviews and I would like to hear from the experts that use digital on a daily basis.

I thought I heard somewhere just a few weeks ago from someone on this forum that Kodak was getting out of the camera business. If that's the case, I'm not sure Kodak would be a good investment.
Cheers,
rfs

James,

As a long time Mamiya user, I am suprised that you didn't mention the Mamiya ZD.

I haven't had the chance to see one in action yet, but I understand that it takes the 645s AF lenses and has a huge 22 million-pixel 36x48mm CCD.

A short review is available at dpreview.com.

Mamiya ZA and Digital Back

Aloha from Hawaii,
Michael

I don't think the ZD has been released yet and from what i've seen on the Mamiya forums there is no ETA at the moment either. But, it does look interesting.

Sorry Marty, I HAD to reply to this one...

I think you mean HasselBLAD. HasselHOFF, on the other hand, is a singing legend (in Germany ) and a soon-to-be crappy white rapper.

Don't believe me? See for yourself!

Although I'm guessing you were just joking around and already knew that.

I think you should go Canon. They're the top dog in digital at the moment. But the DCS and 20D aren't really comparable. The high end Canons are the 1D Mk 2 and the 1Ds Mk 2.

I don't own either (20D is on order for walk around). It is my understanding that if you are doing studio work then the Kodac would be the best route. But if you are going to be doing outside and with sports then the 20D would be a wiser move. If you have the bucks (about three times the cost of the 20D) and will do a lot of sports then you want to look at the 1Dm2, or if not a lot of sports a used 1Ds (also selling for around $4,000.00 at this time). From what I read of your uses I'd opt for the used 1Ds, great resolution, and almost as fast as the 1Dm2 and a full size sensor. Good luck..
