Can anyone tell me what the purpose of a Ring Flash is.
Is it used for just Micro Photography or can it be used in all aspects.
Thanks

I assume you're talking about the circular flash units that attach to the end of the lens via the filter mount threads...

I've seen them used often at events, such as wedding receptions and the like. I'd also assume that some folks use them in portraiture to trigger their strobes or in conjunction with hotlights to get that goofy circular catchlight in the eyes.

Cheers!

I have a cd that shows the photographers of playboy using a ring flash to do the photos for the playboy calendar. I believe it works in place of having to carry around strobes when on location.

We've covered ring flash extensively here over the last few months. If you search the tech forum using just the words: "ring flash", and go back 6 months, you'll get quite a lot. The short answer to the question & answers posted so far is, yes, ring flash is used extensively for fashion and glamour, with, but usually without, other lights, and the better units do not screw into the lens, but rather sit in rig that lets you shoot through it, like the Profoto. The light quality is crisp and even, and the circular flash tube (that goes all the way around the lens) makes a unique shadow on the background (if the background is close enough to the mode) while making shadowless light on the model. Here's a sample of a Profoto ring flash in use by itself.

Based on looking at the images, I often notice many Playboy shoots use ring lights as fill even when using other strobes in the studio or when doing outdoor mixed daylight/strobe sets.

I'm waiting on an adapter now so I can start using a Profoto ring flash with my Norman 200b pack as a fill for shooting on the beach.

Ringflash makes an excellent fill source if it's ratio'ed properly. If so, you can't even tell it's there.

KERPOW!!!!!!!

Left hook out of nowhere.

Andy, I've seen your ring light photo several times on here and this is the first time I have ever noticed that golf clubs were in the photo.

I hope this wasn't a golf glub advertisement.

I'm not kidding you, I have looked at this photo like 10 times and I just noticed that for the fist time.

About your model...As Paris Hilton would say "That's Hot".
