I'm looking for a Canon EF wide angle lens for my EOS 10D. What would be the best Canon lens for landscape type work.

The Canon 22-55 is a bargain at about $100. I use it a lot; not well constructed but good optical quality. I also have a 16mm Russian made MF lens I use sometimes. Cost about $100 on eBay. Well made but you have to remember to stop down after focusing. I made both of these (combined) exposures with it.

thanks, I have always been a wide angle lens fan but they get expensive for digital. Here is a shot with the Olympus 7-14mm with my wife's E-300.

Nikon D1x and Nikon 17-35 AF-S, which is my favorite of all my lenses.

there's a 1.6x magnification factor with the 10D because its sensor chip is not sized at 35mm. so a 20mm lens on that camera actually becomes a 32mm lens and so forth.

The 17-40L will probably be your best bet.

Unless of course you would want to spring for a 14mm (the Sigma isn't too bad of price) or the 16-35L Canon with is up around $1300

The Canon zoom lenses that are mentioned here cause fairly marked barrel distortion. Don't know if this particularly bothers you too much. If it does, you're better off with a prime, and a very wide one because of the very high multiplication factor of the 10D. Another problem is the viewfinder. Hard to see and focus especially at wider angles with diminished magnification and the very small, dim focus screen in the 10D.

I use the Tamron 17-35 DI lens. It is great. I used it on my 10D and now use it on my 20D. Bet of all, it is much less expensive that the Canon equivalent and yet is at least as good as the Canon.
Cheers,
rfs
