I have had my own cataloging system for my digital images for 5 years. Occasionally I would grumble at myself for my inability to find an image using the system. I am now contemplating Extensis' Portfolio system Has anyone used it and if so what do you think?

Mike,
I have it and on and off, I try to figure out a workflow using it. I've alwasys made folders for all my images and stored them on the hard drive untit I was done working with them. At this point I burn them images to cd and store it away. I'm to the point now where I need to find some older images and a keyword search capability would be really nice. Portfolio seems to do everything I need it to do, I just have to learn to take the time to use it. It is more time consuming then manually dumping images into folders, but will probably save a lot of time and frustration down the road. I would love to here about the workflow of others using portfolio.

Mike, I am not sure if Bob Warren has read this thread, but you want to PM him. I asked this SAME question over the weekend in a thread and Bob had replied that Extensis may be the way to go. The title of my post was "Image storage ideas needed" and I received some very helpful suggestions, Extensis, AC/DSee and some others. I am in the process of reviewing all of the suggestions before I choose. If you get there before me, drop me a line with your thoughts on your choice.

Mark
My system has been to make a folder by date. Copy once over to a different hard drive in another CPU and burn originally a CD copy now a DVD copy. In the beginning the CDs were done drag and drop. Many of those CDs are now falling apart many files lost. I only burn DVDs now but it is tough sometimes to quickly find images on the hard drive. I suspected that using portfolio would require commitment of time initially but I am beginning to think I may have no other choice.

Extensis' last "newsletter" (no news, just sales pitches) had a link to their site titled "Digital Photography Workflow: Top Photographers Talk Shop." They also have a page of Video Demos of Portfolio's functions. Personally, I use Apple's iPhoto for cataloging/searching, but Portfolio looks like a good product for PC people. --Randy

Hi Mike,

I have a program that will recover just about any files on a damaged CD or any other media. I bought it as a last ditch effort to try to recover files from a number of bad CDs and I was able to recover EVERY ONE OF THEM with this program. The kicker is that I don't know what I did with the program because I've since reformatted my system and don't know where the program file is stored in my collection of software. I'll have to look around. I don't remember the name of the program but when I find it, I'll let you know. It was well-worth the $29 I spent on it.

Best wishes to you, sir! Have a great week and weekend.

Mike

I bought a program called CD Roller that was about 80% effective.
