I can definitely recommend that you stay away from non-Canon inks. I tried to find the high-end alternative sets for the Canon like they have for Epson -- no luck.

Paper -- LOTS of papers! I've been using both Hahnemühle http://www.hahnemuhle.com/ and Red River http://www.redrivercatalog.com/ Order the sample pack from Red River -- it's cheap and has 2 sheets of everything they make.

I also use Pictorico http://www.pictorico.com/ for their white glossy film. WOW. Talk about crisp looking B&W!

I use the G & G brand ink with my Canon I900 and I9000. It gives very good results. Not quite as good as the Canon Ink but not enough that anyone can really notice other than me. I get 6 carts for $25 compared to 6 or $66 for the Canon carts. I pretty much settled on the Matte Canon paper as it is quite inexpenive.
Cheers,
Roger

I have the i9900.

I have not tried other inks yet, but I have seen recommendations for inkgrabber.com for all the ink colors except the CYANS. (they said the inkgrabber cyans add a color tint to B&W prints) I just ordered some, but ordered the Canon Cyan.

For paper, I am in love with Ilford Smooth Pearl.

I have been using Laser Monks with happy results for a few months. Prices are low because they are monks. No, really, they are monks.

I'm not sure how pricy the i960 is, but some caution. You may want to look at the warrenty for this printer. Some manufacturers void warrenty if you use 3rd party inks. Been there done that and had mine voided on one of my Epson 3000s (older dinosaur)
The ink sucked also, messed up my printer, took it in for service and thats when they said,...yeah they'll fix it but on my dime. =( Where you think you save upfront could bite ya in the arse later.

I found this place to purchase ink, haven't used them yet but plan to in the near future. Get all 6 cartridges for $43.99 which runs you less the $7.50 per cartridge.

WOW they are half price. What printer are you using and how are the colors compared to OEM inks?

I have a Canon S900. I have been happy with the colors, but I have not done a deep comparison. I use the printer mainly for examples and family stuff only. I do some advertising with it.
