First I need to mention that I am near broke, college definitely has a way of doing that. But I've been looking on ebay and I've seen a few 35 mm SLR's I like. Minolta XG-1 and a few Pentax seem to be what is in my price range and my parents have a Minolta XG-1 so that is what I'm familiar with. Now as far versatility and ease of use I would think the Minolta is a better brand of camera. I just wanted everyone else's opinion.

On a side note I know everyone will tell me to save my money and buy something a little more up to date but I'm still learning and I think something inexpensive like this will help me build up to a more advanced camera. So tell me what you think. Thanks

Pentax MEsuper or ME SUPER PROGRAM, fully manual and has auto exposure.
Pentax K1000 is popular starter camera for learning full manual
Nikkormat FtN Fully manual everything (a TANK of a camera)
Minolta maxxum 5000 or 7000/ 5000i or 7000i might be nice, full auto and full manual available with autofocus
Minolta XG1's do take good photos. But search around, the above listed cameras also give great photos and may offer a few more options for around your price range.

But if I had to choose, betweem the xg or the pentax, it would be a pentax ME Super.

If I were you, I'd go to KEH and buy, rather than e-bay. And I've used Pentax for thirty years. I'd get an ME, a K-1000, or - my personal favorite, since LX's are too pricey - an MX. Small, light (for metal), strong. And you can put a K-mount lens on even the new digital Pentax.

OTOH, I have a friend who used to shoot a Minolta and loved it. But it was an STR, I believe.

I've been using Pentax ME Supers for nearly 20 years now. I started out with the K1000 but found much more versatility with the ME, not to mention they are tiny; the world's smallest SLR body of their time, possibly still today. I have probably 5 working bodies in my posession, and still use them for some of my 3-D work. Not long ago I picked one up on eBay matched with a 50mm 1.4 lens for just $100. Starting out with a camera like this will prepare you well. Here's one of thousands of shots from one of my ME Supers.

I hate to reply to this thread, but I had too. If I was getting a cheap camera I would probably try to buy a new Nikon or Canon (maybe the Rebel). With a 20 year old camera, your getting that a 20 year old camera. Many people on here love their old cameras and keep them up. My first SLR 25 years ago was a XG-1. I hated it. It was a very well designed camera and a very good price $249. The insides went out 5 years after I bought it, I think corrosion was the common problem with these. My friends XG-7 went out 3 years after he bought it. With both of ours you'd press the shutter button and the shutter would go click.............click.

Buy a new Nikon or Canon?
Being near broke may hamper that kind of effort for him. That's probably why he was looking at cameras in the 75.00 to 100.00 range. And for that 75.00 he can get some VERY NICE older equipment that still works great and will include a few lenses and a flash. And will help him produce some amazing photographs when used correctly.

hehehe and my older cameras, never got taken care of. ( till I bought the canon F1 new style) But amazingly they work great still. Now I cannot speak for the XG series Other than the photos I saw from them were good. But I did not own any of those xg series cameras.
But the K1000, ME super, Nikkormat FTN, maxxum 7000, and so on, did and do work very nicely even today. Older equipment can be a risk, so going for the better of the older is best choice. Ones known for their durability.

Well John, glad you asked. I am deciding on the Pentax ME Super. Although I have much more experience with the XG-1 I want to branch out and try a Pentax. Plus I think that the addition of a post with an image in it that was taken by an ME helped in aiding my decision. I may have to wait a few more weeks to get it though, gotta pay some bills.

Ebay has a nice collection of used cameras although KEH and B&H have some nice ones as well. I might just want to pay the extra 20 bucks and buy from one of those places instead of ebay. But like it was earlier stated when you buy used, you get used, no matter where you buy it. I know this phrase all too well (being 21 and owning 4 cars since I was 17 puts it in perspective).

On a side note, my gf bought me a photography book for Valentine's Day. If any of you have been reading my earlier posts you would know that this is a revalation. Thanks for everyone's input

GREAT CHOICE INDEED! When buying from ebay ( in case ya dont know) always check the sellers feedback, and email and make sure the seller knows the camera, lenses and flash etc are working right. And good luck

Congrats, good choice, IMO.

Have fun. There used to be a fairly active Pentax community with loads of lens info, etc. Some of the "A" lenses are still highly regarded. I have had several users recommend the 70-210/f4 and the 35-135/f4 zooms as being extremely sharp, with fixed aperatures. And Pentax had some of the best wide angle lenses going. But then again, you probably don't want to invest too much into a lens system.

As for the mechanical endurance - I can't speak for the Canon XG, but my Pentax K-1000 is still going strong after 28? years.
