I'm confused... I'm thinking of buying a softbox for my alien bees, but then I start reading about Beauty Dish's. What kind of results do you get with a Beauty Dish? I don't know which would be a better purchase to take portraits with? I have a 400 know, but will be getting a larger one, in the next few months! So with only 1 light right now, what do you think would be the best?

They are very forgiving...

Being a very large light source, they will "wrap" light around your model and cut down shadows. A beauty dish being a much smaller source will require some effort to control shadows. Now I'm talking a 30 inch by 40 inch softbox with an internal diffuser, or one with the strobe firing backwards and reflecting off the back surface versus a 16 inch or thereabouts beauty dish.

But that's just my opinion....

For general use, you want a large softbox. Mine is 3x4' but some guys like them even larger. A beauty dish is much more specialized. It's great for headshots but I'm not sure a small SB wouldn't be just as good. A large SB won't work for this purpose unless you have a ton of headroom because you have to get it high enough to shoot under it. These three pix were taken with my 25" Photogenic dish.

This was taken with my large SB.

Search the forums for "beauty dish" and you'll find a bunch of examples. It's not a matter of being better or worse than a softbox, it's just different.

I've got a big softbox and a beauty dish, both are great but both have the disadvantage that the light goes friggin everywhere. I'm kind of in the market for a smaller softbox with some louvers or grids so I can have a soft light source just where I want it.

Rumor has it that the speedotron 22" grid will fit the alien bees beauty dish. I haven't been able to confirm this rumor yet though. It would be nice to be able to rein in that light a little bit!

P.S. shot this with a beauty dish on a B800. Improper use of the modifier? Maybe so but don't let anybody tell you anything "has" to be used a certain way.

This was shot with the Interfit beauty dish modified for use with Alienbee head. Best $43 I ever spent.

One AB 1600 30" Octobox. No other light source.

You wanna learn lighting? Get a harsh source. You wanna produce great results time after time, get a big light source.

Or, get a few lights that can give you harsh when you want it, and the big look when you need it, and make history with your versatility.
