At this point in my photography career, I have accumulated a fair number of images. I want to keep most of them at this point to view at later dates and see how I have progressed as a photographer. As my post production skills improve, there may also be some current images that can be salvaged as well. I know you seasoned vets will have thousands of images stored, which brings me to my question.

Can you provide me tips, ideas, software or a combination of the three to allow me to store images. I am not necessarilly asking about hard drive space...I know I can add addditional drive space...I am more specifically asking HOW or is there a SYSTEM to store them categorically and provide an easier way to find a specific image later.

Currently I am simply creating new folders and titling the folders as detailed as possible to find a certain image or group of images. Is there software available to categorize the images with keywords so that I can create a search and minimize the manual search I am having to perform at this point??

Is there a rule of thumb when naming an image?? or is that for the ease of finding the stored image at a later date??

And finally when saving the final product, do you save one for web viewing and one for print with the appropriate resolutions OR is that done on an as need basis??

Any ideas or comments will be appreciated...

Couple thoughts....I think it first depends on what you shoot. Do you shoot people mostly, landscape, product or a variation of all of the above. Either way, here is kind of how I do it. I have a folder called models for example. Under that I have the models name. If I work with that model several times the next folder would be named by the date I worked with that model. For landscape I name it by area. For example Grand Canyon, and then get more specific from there.

There are several software packages out there that will help to. ACDSee is one of my personal favorites.

I burn all of the images for each model to a CD. It's very easy to go back if I ever have to and retrieve one and it doesn't clog up my hard drive. But the bottom line is that there will only be one or two images from each outfit that are really worth keeping.

My own naming convention is -

yymmdd - card number (I use a letter) - and image number. i.e. 050205A-24

That ensures no duplicate names.

I have all the shots out of the camera plus Photoshop files of any that I've cleaned up. I create files for the web from those and separate files for printing if needed. The PSD file never gets changed by either step.

I use a CYA naming convention model name or other short phrase
and the the time stamp that fuji allows

Its long but even if I duplicate models name the time/date saves me

then i set up a directory with a full name

I also use IDE cards to put 8 drives in a box

Are you looking for database software?

LIke say the window you open has two zones, one left and one right. On the left is descriptions say " Andrea red/green bathing suit shoot" and a whole bunch of other listings like that, then when you click on that description the right zone comes up with the photos from that shoot?

Or am I misunderstanding what you wrote?

John, YES that is what I am picturing...more of a database filing system so that if I am looking for a red/swimsuit/blonde/blue eyes...all pictures fitting that description will be found..

Sorry if I was unclear in my post... ANY SUGGESTIONS??

Thanks Brent, I will check out the software. I am saving pretty much that way now...with folders, subfolders and so on...the problem is there is no way to SEARCH for a specific picture if you happen to forget how you named it AND where you placed it. I have had it happen to me already a couple of times so I am trying to hedge a potentially HUGE problem down the road.
