A friend is looking to purchase the 70-200 2.8 and was wondering if the IS is worth the $500 difference? I too would be interested in hearing from those that have possibly shot with both. I own the 70-200 F4 and I love this lens, but I am sure the 2.8 is just that much sweeter.

I'd pay for the IS but I wouldn't pay for the extra weight or the extra cost of the 2.8.

I've not shot with the IS, and, most others I know of that shoot with the 70-200mm don't have it either. I get good results without it . However, if your friend has the money to spend...I guess he could go for it. Or, maybe save the $500 and buy another lens

If you're trying to do handheld at less than 1/250 then IS is a blessing, otherwise forgetaboutit. The added weight and cost are a lot..

Yes.

took the WORD right out of my mouth

The IS version is awesome and worth every penny, it works great with the 1.4 extender and if you consider that you will keep this lens FOREVER, it is well worth the cost, got mine for about $1600 from Beach Camera, hope he buys it before the end of today, as that is when the Canon Rebates go....bye-bye...
