Hey:

Hypothetical, I know some light meters will do candlepower readings but wonder is there some correlation between guide number used for flashes and candlepower.

Here's what got me thinking (and I'm sitting here on my rear and haven't got all the stuff out to try it yet)

I have this rechargeable 1. Million Candlepower spotlight that is really bright, light weight and portable.

I saw a photo a couple weeks back of a guy holding one aimed up at the sky at night which was taken with a combination of slow sync and rear curtain flash that was really quite cool. There was some fog in the air, and the spotlight was projecting out into the fog in a nice "Lighthouse" effect. That got me thinking about using mine at night for photos.

Anyway, I had never really thought about using it for photos, but mine seems bright enough to shoot with.

But afterall, its a spotlight, it would be harsh, right.

Well, what if I shot it through my 2x3 softbox?

I think it would be bright and soft, lightweight and portable.

I realize I would have to do a custom white balance, but I think I could do some neat night shots.

Before I get it all out and start messing with it, I just wondered if anyone new what guide number one million candlepower might work out to be and whether I would have enough light to do a reasonable hand held exposure or whether I would have to do tripod shots.

Just thinking about it.

If I get it out later this week and give it a try, I will post some shots.

Mark -

I found this, which has some interesting equations. But it appears that, ultimately, the guide number depends critically on the reflector involved and the relationship between candlepower and light power is based on a strobe, and probably not correct for a continuous source.

As we say in my field, "Why spend three hours in the library looking up the answer when you can spend three days in the laboratory making the measurement?" This sounds like something easier to measure than to calculate.

Interesting idea. Good luck.
