I have a Canon 20D... I am thinking of getting a ring flash for some fashion images... Do I need that or just to set my studio lights different to create that effect?

You know the shadow ring behind the girl.....

You need a real ringflash to get that effect because you have to have a crisp light that goes evenly completely around the lens. We've discussed on this forum, ways to simulate it and come close, and one - Jerry Avenaim's 4-bulb flourescent rig - does a good job of getting the look, but it is bulky (hard to hand-hold ) and not very bright since its not flash. Do a search for some of those discussions, but for my money the real thing is the only way to get this look...

This is a Profoto ringflash adapted for use with Norman power packs, shot on Velvia 50 in 35mm.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, would it be worth my money to get a cheaper one or just save up for a nice one? I know you get what you pay for but I also know with somethings cheaper can be just as good....
