Actually, Save for Web works fine. It cuts the data in the file to something near what most web browsers can understand.

What I've found works best for me:

Shoot RAW
Convert with Adobe
Edit in 16 bit and Adobe RGB
Resize
Unsharp Mask
Convert to 8 bit and then convert to sRGB
Save for Web with as little compression as I can and still keep the file size within bounds
