Hi all,

I'm shooting with a D70. I've been shooting mostly large, fine, jpeg images but want to move on up to shooting raw. For Nikon, it's the infamous and proprietary NEF format. I just got my Photoshop CS upgrade and I was of the understanding the CS recognized raw files. I tried opening up some raw files I shot for a test and I get a big, fat nothing...nadda, zip, nix. I went to the Adobe site, downloaded the latest and greatest file for raw format recognition and still nothing. Do I need to do some interim save step in my Nikon Picture Project software before PS will recognize these files or what? If so, that kind of defeats the whole purpose of saying that PS CS will open raw files. I must be doing something wrong. Your guidance would be most appreciated!!

Good day!

Mike

Yes, you must be doing something wrong. I have the D70 and CS and have no problem opening the D70's NEF files.

The latest release of Adobe Camera Raw is 2.3, with 2.4 in beta. Get 2.3 from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...jsp?ftpID=2609

Once you unzip it, move the file 'Camera Raw.8bi' to the Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\File Formats folder.

After doing that, try running CS and opening a .NEF. It should now work. Good luck!

I do not have a D70, so I'm shooting a question to you in the dark, but is there any chance you have been saving the files as COMPRESSED NEF? If so, I THINK you'll have to re-save them as UNCOMPRESSED using either View or Capture.

In the D70 menu, it just says 'RAW', without specifying compressed or uncompressed, though I believe it is compressed in-camera. However, I have neither View nor Capture installed, and can open the files fine with CS alone.

Ditto "brother7"s post. Just get and install the latest Adobe RAW Converter definitions as he said, and it will work just fine. I have a D70 and it even works for me (and nothing seems to work the first time for me).

Hi Ed,

I did go to the Adobe site and I have installed the latest 2.3 version of the camera raw file. After restarting CS, I tried opening an NEF file and it opened up a little white square about 1/4" x 1/4" with nothing in it. I will try shooting some new test shots tonight and try again.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Andy,

I installed the latest raw conversion file, 2.3, and restarted CS to try again and all it did was open a small white box 1/4" x 1/4" and that was it. It was the same for all 15 or 20 NEF files that I tried opening. I'll try some new test shots tonight and try again. I'm about 99% positive that I installed the new 2.3 update right since I'm very computer literate (have been building them and fixing software problems for years) and so at least on that front I know what I'm doing. Nevertheless, I'll be going back and double checking that as well.

Hey, on another note, are you, or perhaps I should say HAVE YOU ALREADY, produced a calendar for 2005? I'd sure like to get another autographed edition to add to my collection of Andy Pearlman bikini calendars. (and for those reading this, I don't mean it's full of shots with Andy in a bikini....LOL...but for a price, maybe Andy would entertain the idea).

Anyway, I hope you had a great Christmas and I hope for you a safe, happy, joyful, prosperous new year!

Good day sir!

Mike

Brother7,

The suggestion to check to see that the camera was set to uncompressed NEF was aimed at Sojourner... He may need to install View or Capture, convert the images, and then go from there.

You may have a conflict between your Adobe and Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi . I know I had to swap the file when I started using nikon NEFs. See the attached answer from Adobe. http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/326616.html
