Croping and keeping the same ratio to print ?

I use elements to edit my photos. Is there a way to keep the ratio the same so your picture will fit right on a 8x10 ?

Re: Croping and keeping the same ratio to print ?

I use photoshop and calculate the smallest width or height by 1.25 to get the longest side. Then I set my marquee at a set ratio using the small and long length that is calulated click on my picture and move the marquee around until I get the picture I want inside the marquee then select crop. I then have a picture that is set for 8 x 10.

if you wish to have the longer length be exactly what you want and crop in on the shorter length then take the longer length and divide it by 1.25. Sometimes this will not work if the divisible ends up being longer than the short side.

I hope this helps. I am not the greatest when it comes to trying to explain what I know.

Float the image by double clicking the background layer and renaming it.
Select Crop tool.
Set desired dimensions (a derivitative of 8x10 ie. 4x5 or 16x20 etc) and desired output resolution.
Open window so that it is larger than image.
Attempt to crop the image. If it does not fit exactly then the crop will fit one side or the other leaving some of the image outside the crop window. Release the crop and then reselect a corner that is on the image border and pull the crop out into the gray area of the framing window until the full image is within the crop window. Position the crop window to your desire. Hit return. If you floated the image you now have a new background the size of the crop and you can reposition the image if you so desire. If you did not then the new image is part of the background and cannot be change short of a new crop.
