Anybody else having issues with SanDisk products? I have several 512MB compact flash cards, a SanDisk dual media (smart media and compact flash card) USB port card reader and a new 1 GB compact flash card.

I fought with the Sandisk dual media reader for a week trying to get it to read the SanDisk 512 cards. It would read my Viking and PNY cards very well thank you, but not the SanDisk. Finally, SanDisk admitted the card reader they made would not read their own compact flash cards. Duh?

They offered me a replacement that would only read compact flash cards. I elected to go buy another card reader as occasionally I run out of space on the cf card in the camera and switch to the smart media card. The new reader (a PNY) works with the SanDisk 512MB cards.

So now with Christmas sales, the 1 GB compact flash card was under $70.

Problem is, it won't read in the new card reader. It will read in the new 2.6 GHz machines front panel multicard reader. But forget using the USB port card reader on that or another older and slower machine. It's like the card is not there.

Anybody else having similar SanDisk or other vendor issues, or is it just me?

PS I'll anticipate the "Go buy Lexar" comments by pointing out that Lexar cards ain't under $70 yet... At least not around here.

I had the same problem once. Thought it was amusing that my SanDisk card wouldn't work with a SanDisk reader. I've already upgraded my reader once. I'd buy Lexar cards, but my old D60 won't benefit from the higher speed cards, so there's no reason to spend the extra cash.

Fortunately, card readers are cheap.

Hi, I use just about every different make of card, size of card, etc. I have a sandisk reader and have had NO issues with it at all reading the 512 meg cards. Reads everything else as well with no problem. I DID have a problem with a PNY reader on my 2.8 Ghz machine running win XP Pro for some reason. Probably a conflict with the driver for the Sandisk reader maybe? Not a problem cause my OLD sandisk reader is working fine. By the way Rolando, if you read this, you still have my 256K Lexar card from Cozumel?...grins...Ralph Haseltine

I use nothing but SanDisk cards (of several flavors) and have had no problems with them in my Dazzle USB reader, Epson PCMCIA adaptor, and one of my buddies' X-Drive "digital wallet" thingy.

I pine for the Lexar FireWire reader...I have yet to find one locally or find a dealer that will order one in for me.

Go to the B&H Photo site, navigate to memory cards, then specify all brands, Compact Flash, 512 MB. Sort by price, low to high. Which brand it at the top? SanDisk. Try it with 256 MB, 1GB, or whatever, and SanDisk will always be at the top of the low-to-high price sort. Meaning: They're cheap. Now go to a membership warehouse. Which brand of cards do they carry? Costco sells only SanDisk. Meaning: They're intended for the mass market.

Digital Photo Review did a comparison of CF cards. No matter how you sort the data -- by read performance, write performance, JPG saves, or RAW saves -- SanDisk 512 MB always comes in dead last.

You don't want to hear "Go buy Lexar," so I'll just point out that to me, it's worth spending a few more bucks for a card I can trust. I use Lexar. --Randy

I have two Ultra II 2gb cards and on Ultra II 1gb card. They both read fine in my HP internal Card Reader and I also have a USB 2.0 (Cheapee-$10) external Card Reader and they work fine in that one as well.
