Ok, I'm feeling a bit like Ed Selby was earlier with his Photoshop problem (fist through the monitor and all that) but only this is concerning my DVD-RW/CD-RW player. I'm trying desparately to back up a bunch of my images onto a DVD but the player isn't recognizing the DVD as a writable media. I'm using Nero 6 Ultra Edition and following the Smart Start wizard through the backup process but it ain't woykin'. Do I need to prepare the DVD for burning somehow? Do I have to prepare files on my hard drive somehow? I just don't know. I haven't done this before. I DO know that I'm frustrated as hell. Any suggestions???

Are your dvd recordables compatible with your dvd recorder?

Some recorders take say 8X dvd -r / -rw, now if you try using an 8x dvd +r or +rw, or a 10x 12x 16x or a dual sided dvd disk, it will not record.
Maybe check to mae sure they are compatible?

Hi John,

The DVDs I'm using are 4.7 GB, 120 minute video, standard 1x-2x DVDs for PC use (as per the box). The DVD player is a Hypermedia DVD-RW. I guess I'll need to do some more research on this DVD burner.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Good day!

Mike

There's a difference between DVD+r and DVD-r. Mine is the same make as yours, but will work with DVD+r only. I tried a -r disk and had the same error you're having. Could that be the problem?

For the record, no matter what you hear from my wife, it did NOT take me two days to figure it out. It's just a rumor. ;-)

Hi Larry,

I just got off the phone with your wife. Guess what she said? She said it took you two days to figure it out. LOL Seriously though, I was just reading up on this drive on the Splinternet and it seems that perhaps I need to get some 8X media or something to that effect. I bookmarked the page so I can flame them when it doesn't work. hehehe I have a 5-pack of DVD-RWs. I didn't even realize that there was +r, -r, yada yada yada. What a pain in the ass. Well, back to Walmart to see what else is available. UGH. This is probably going to take me a good three days to work out (but don't listen to my wife tell you how long it took ME!) hehehe

Good day sir!

Mike

Mike,

Sony, Plextor and a few others will handle both the -R and +R DVD's.

Also keep this in mind if you ever try to read them on a laptop or give one to a friend. They may or not be able to read them. Same goes if you ever get a new computer -- make sure it is compatible. Would be a shame if you couldn't access all those gigabytes of photos.

I sold my first DVD writer and will only get one that reads both formats

I just wanted to post my opinion on this.
The CD burner you are referring to, the hypermedia would probably need a firmware update. This is the bios inside the burner, simply go to the hypermedia website and look for the latest firmware update. This DVD burner is actually made by NEC of america. It has major issues with certain media brands.

Also, I highly suggest the SONY dru 530A. This burner will burn and read any type of DVD -r -rw +r +rw cd and CDRW. The just released DRU 700 will burn dual layer and -r -rw +r +rw. And also burn CD/CDRW. The sony software that comes with the burner are very very good. But the burners work with just about any software on the market.

Thanks

Hey Mike. Someone already pointed this out, so, I might be redundant here, but what the hay. There is a difference with the little + or - sign. Some DVD burners will do both, you might try to see if there are DVD's with both signs on them. Who knows, there might me. Also one other thing, your DVD player might be too old, I'm not sure though.
