Yes, three suggestions:
(1) never let your brother in law play with your computer again.
(2) immediately run an up-to-date virus scan on your computer.
(3) then run both Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy to get rid of your spyware.

You may need to go into the Add/Install programs section of your control panel to get rid of the unwanted toolbar additives.

Good luck! I maintain 26 computers in a high school multimedia lab and it's a constant battle to keep people from installing (either intentionally or unintentially) all those little buggers that'll drag your system down to molasses.

Its on my brother-in-law's computer, and he's usually pretty good at this stuff. By coincidence, the LA Times had a front page story on spyware Friday, with possible help. Also a couple related stories (one from Thursday). You can see all the links here, but may have to register (its free) or get the paper to read them.

(NOTE - there are three actual articles, you may have to scroll down to read them. The first is called "Breaking, Entering Your PC, the next one deals with a new kind of service tech, the next, on Firefox)

To remove the "search" bar....

In IE click on "VIEW" up top.. then highlight "toolbars" and remove the check mark (by clicking it), to remove any toolbars that you dont want to show up.

Dont know what you mean by links on segments of words... sorry..

Use Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy... You can find links to them at:

Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D

Also, if you can find out the name of the toolbar you can try to uninstall it from Add/Remove programs..

3 great steps I use often. But with #1 I don't let Anyone use my systems. Pain in the ass to trouble shoot what they don't admit to doing. What search bar was installed? Yahoo? Google? Other?

I've found Giant Antispyware to be more effective than either Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy.

http://www.giantcompany.com

You can also protect yourslef from a lot of this crap by installing Windows XP service pack 2

or

Switch browsers to Firefox http://www.mozilla.org

named BEGIN2Search. A registry check has it embedded pretty deep...even deeper than gator.

I had been running spybot to try and get rid of it, but it never would see it.

it was really strange...it is like it this little bug scans the page after it loads then finds key words. It then turns those words into links

like REGISTERED would look like this REGISTERED or CATALOG would look like CATALOG
