I feel your pain, still trying to buy a lighting kit after all of these years. Word of the wise, when your mother calls you out of the blue to go in with her and your brother and her boyfriend on a house, don't do it. Sure its cheaper then your monthly rent, but eventually it sucks you dry and you can never escape!
Now that i have spoken the financial photographic accessory woes, allow me to aid you in your quest to go digital.
You should be looking at the following cameras,
Canon Digital Rebel
Canon 20D (for what you would be getting a 10d for short of used, might as well save pennies (almost literally) for another month or so and up to the
20d, a superior camera by far to the 10d)
Olympus E-1 system (if you don't mind going olympus glass)
and the latest entry Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D with Anti Shake built in (essentially VR but in the camera body)
All of these bodies will provide solid work on many levels of shooting and woln't destory the wallet.
Any questions about any of them feel free to inquire
