What I love about this camerea is it was designed from the ground up for digital photography. In addition it (unlike any other DSLR) is designed in a 4:3 aspect ratio. In short you don't have to think about cropping your image as you would in 35mm proportions. It works out to a perfect 8X10 11X14 etc.

Best,

Jerry Thanks for the reply and the info. The camera has been out about a year now and is a 5 megapexel camera. Now Olympus is introducing its new 8 meg cameras and other manufactures also, is the E-1 with all its features still the better camera?
Or maybe to be a little more to the point how would you compare the 8 meg to the E-1?

While the new E-300 is a higher MP camera, it is still on the consumer level compared to the E-1. Now, I have not yet used the E-300 so it is difficult to give you a truly educated response. However, so many folks think MEGAPIXEL MEGAPIXEL MEGAPIXEL and it's not all about the MEGAPIXEL. You have to consider the chipset size and bit depth when buying digital.

There was a page on (I think) DP Review that showed photographes of all the makes and manufacturers sensor. It blew my mind to see the difference in sensor sizes all the way from point and shoot to DSLR and pro digital camera backs.

You can have two 8 MP cameras and what sets them apart in image quality is the size of those sensors and their bit depth! One thing to keep in mind is that all (thus far) 35mm type DSLR's shoot at 8 bit while compared to a pro digital back shoots at up to 16 bit. Check out DP REVIEW and have fun doing some research. There's a lot to learn!

All the best,

After spending about two months researching DLSR's I finally settled on the E-1 and am very happy with the quality of the camera and pics.

Check out the DPReview Olypus SLR forum at DPReview

The prices have come down quite a bit since I got mine. There have been prices quoted as low as around $1350 for the kit including a small flash.

Arlington Camera has been mentioned in the DPReview forum as having some good prices and great service. Check them out at Arlington Camera link

I thought Rolando and I were the only ones at GG that have the E-1. It's good to hear that Jerry has one too.

BTW Olympus is coming out with more lenses and also Sigma has a few in the 4/3 format that are costing 200 bucks and change.
