I spent a lot of time researching studio lightning before settling on Alien Bees.

I found several postings on various sites about the poor quality of the JTL products and also several people mentioned that their customer service sucks.

If you check out any postings on this and other sites you will find very few complaints and mostly good comments about the Alien Bees. I am just getting my setup started but so far the two Bees that I have are working very well.

My recommendation is to get at least the 800's and pass on the 400's. The 800's are only about 50 buck more and give you twice the power.

As soon as I can get the funds together I will be buying at least three more and a few more accessories.

Go for the bee's. I have the JTL Versa light 300 and yes they put out lots of light but the modling light and the slave switchs don't last at all. All 3 lights have bad switches. And yes the tech support stinks. The lights were only used about 10 times before the switches went bad.

Go with the BEES. Here is also a site you might want to check out for FANTASTIC prices on stands, umbrellas, reflectors softboxes and more. www.amvona.com GREAT stuff. I just ordered their XL softbox, which happens to look EXACTLY like Photoflex Multidome for only $149.00 I'll let you know if it is the same build quality, but it looks like an exact copy for about 1/2 the price.

Amvona also has a store on eBay: Amvona store I bid on and got their 4-background holder for $46 plus shipping; it's $129 in their catalog. They don't put everything in their catalog up for auction, but what they do offer you can pick up for less than their catalog price. --Randy
