I'm in the process of shopping for a new computer and I was wondering what the collective wisdom of this community is regarding flat panel vs. CRT monitors. When doing photoshop and other image related work are there any issues that I should be aware of? What kinds of experiences have you had? The desk space required for a flat panel monitor is very appealing.

Regards,
Lonnie

Don't get attached to the idea of having more space on your desk. A CRT is the better way to go IMHO. They have better contrast rating than LCDs, meaning more accurate color reroductions. Compared to a same-size LCD, CRT monitors are also much cheaper. Thats my logic on shopping for displays. Check out http://www.tomshardware.com and search for 'monitor' to get comprehensive reviews on some good models (monitors that is ) to choose from.

Off subject... I believe this is my second post here at GG. I've been a lurker for some time now. Most of my better work is in journalistic photography but I'm also interested in glamour photography which brought me to this site.

I have a laptop and a desktop. I like them both for different reasons. I use my desktop to do my retouching because of the highest contrast range. I can see details in the shadows that don't appear on my LCD screen.
However I like to make color ajustments and make my prints using my laptop because the contrast range of the LCD screen is not too far from the one for paper.

I don't use any of the fancy gismos available on the market to calibrate the chain camera-screen-printer; so my opinion is enterely subjective.

CRTs are still the way to go for photo work. Flat panels only reach optimum at one resolution and are not as stable yet as CRTs.

What is a lacie? If you are refering to an 19" LCD, it's not worth the money at $400. Now if you are talking about a 19" flat CRT, that is another story. If you have a CompUSA near you, check out some of the monitors there. They normally have a good selection and competitive prices. Sure you can find it cheaper on the internet... but then you pay shipping

It sounds like CRTs are still the way to go.

Thanks for your help,
