because I drive a jeep wrangler and can't ever keep anything locked inside, I usually only carry a small bag with my camera, a few lenses and a nikon sb-28 flash...all of which I can carry inside. However, I really don't like taking pics with the flash attached to the camera. I am thinking of getting a nikon SU-4 "wireless" slave unit so that I can trigger the flash (according to Nikon from up to 23 feet away). Anyone have any experience with one of these? How effective are they?

I have one that I never failed me.. The hot shoe rotates and the sensor can be tilted so you can aim it to help make sure you cameras flash triggers it since it does require light to trigger it.. It also has a confirmation beep that you can disable if you wish.. Also it has a standard 1/4-20 mount on the base..

I don't have a use for it anymore since I use SB-80's which have this feature built in.

I have a couple of them and they work quite well.

They work in ttl mode, but I prefer to just use them as "manual" slave triggers. Since I shoot digital, I just use the lcd to check my ratios. Before I had a digital camera, I used then with a nikon f5 and they did work in ttl mode, but you have to use them a while to get the hang of where to place them, etc.

And I have had no trouble getting them to work at further than the magic 23 feet. My understanding of the 23 foot limit is the "pre-flash" emitted for ttl dies off after that.

You still have to use either the built in on camera flash or a regular flash to fire them, but you can set the "triggering" flash to low output so the slave is predominant.
