My Nikon Coolpix 5700 would on occasion have a problem reading one of my Memorex cards. After reformatting it in the camera it would work for a while and then crash again. It never harmed the camera though.

Last week my Olympus E-1 started to act weird and would not read some of my cards and wouldn't even allow me to format them. I called Olympus tech support and they determined the card reader was fried. Could a bad CF card cause this to happen?

I sent the camera in last week Wed. and got it back today. They repaired it under warranty.

I am concerned about using the Memorex cards in the camera again for fear of frying the card reader again.

The cards work just fine in the card reader attached to the computer and I was able to format them from the computer. I thought maybe by formatting them on the computer it would flush out any errors that may be in the memory. That didn't seem to help any.

I guess I could try and get a warranty replacment on the cards or just pitch them and not risk using them in my camera.

Mark,

The CF card reader wheather its in your camera or on your computer is nearly identicle and neither have any physical components its all electrical. I don't believe you can damage a reader with a bad card. Its just my opinion but I am an electrical engineer and have done aerospace avionics integration and certification for thirty-five years.

I agree with Mark. I also am a EE and the memory cards should not be able to harm your computer or your camera, even if you have a bad one. Even thought the cards pass electricity through them, the origional signal is coming from the card reader and it is either a 1 or a 0...on or off. The card does not generate any electrical signal of its own, it simply manipulates the signal coming from the reader to indicate on or off. That said, the only way the card could generate an electrical charge is if static electricity was built up in the card from some external source. The static electricity would have discharged when you inserted it into the first card reader (camera or computer), so if the card is still working, it should be fine now. I highly doubt that static electricity was your problem...just trying to cover all bases. Bottem line, it was probably the reader in the camera and should be fine now. (I also have a coolpix 5700 which has occasionally suffered the same lockup, but the same cards have never caused a problem in my D70). Hope this helps.

While I'm not going to pretend on how or why this is happening, sounds like getting the camera fixed under warrenty is a smart move, my other recommendation is to use a different brand of card if possible, or just buy a new one to replace it. It could just be that one card. Good luck.
