I'll be buying a digital SLR in the next week or so, and I've narrowed it to the Nikon D100 (which I know everyone loves) and the Pentax *ist Digital. The Pentax is in the mix because all my 35-mm equipment is Pentax K-mount, and I'd like to be able to use some or all of the glass that I already own.

Does anyone have any experience with the Pentax camera? (I've posted here because there is no "user review" of this camera on the other board.)

Thanks,
Lee

Hi Mike, I have used one the Pentax digital for around 10 months. What would you like to know?

Do you like it?

If you've used the Nikon or the Canon units, who would you compare the performance?

Do you use pre-digital glass with it? If so, have you liked the results?

Using pre-digital glass, is the image captured at the size shown in the viewfinder, are do you have to keep the digital/35-mm conversion in mind when framing your pics?

Any other random thoughts.

I haven't used either Nikon or Canon.

I have used all the glass I have with this body, 50mm f2 manual, 28-200mm, 100-300; then I bought a 18-35 designed for the camera and also a Tamron 28-75 f2.8. The view finder is nearly full frame. I have shot everything from models to horse races with it. In jpg mode it is very fast.

Here is a link to some pics taken with it at the Ky Horse Park.

From Keeneland weekend before last.

I am happy to report it has passed the drop test:-)

Here's a link to a review on the DP Review site.

You should check out all your potential digital purchases there.

I use a Pentax istD (2). Same reason...I can use the glass from the PZ-1Ps. With an adapter I could even use the lenses from my 6X7. I love the camera. It's light, fit's great, adequate rez. I use mostly an 85 1.4 and the 16-45 digital zoom. The shot below was from an istD w/85.

I also have a PZ-1p and I wanted to keep that system and it's lenses. I have had prints as large as 16x20 printed and the results were excellent. It really depends on much you have invested in your current glass and if you plan on continuing to use the Pentax film bodies.

What about the \"D\" versus the \"DS\"

The newer "DS" version of the *ist is much less expensive than the original "D" version. Does anyone know why? The DS even appears to have a small number of additional features. Is the "D" version sturdier (less of the "planned-obsolesence" that we love so much)?

Thanks,
Lee

Here is a link with a side by side comparison of the two cameras, note the istds uses SD memory cards.

I just don't see any feature that justifies the extra money for the "D" rather than the "DS."

Does anyone know the reason for the pricing differential?
