My 20D has frozen on me a few times, usually while using the 550EX. Did it at a wedding today and I had to remove and reinsert batteries into the grip to 'reboot' it. Anyone else having this issue? I seem to remember someone posting a similar thread about the 1D Mark 2 freezing with the 550EX.

No problems here with mine, although I am using the 550EX flash. I did a fast glance at a few sites and failed to find any current threads on that phenomenon. I am wondering what firmware you are using, however, since the 1.0.4 had some lock up issues. As far as I am aware, the 1.0.5 now available cleared the problems up.

It just won't do anything. I couldn't even turn it off. Just sat there and wouldn't function. Only by removing the batteries partway to break the contact and reinserting them did it come back on. Third time it's happened in the two weeks or so since I got it. LCD display was still active but stuck on the settings I had dialed in at the time it froze, even when I turned it off. I dropped Canon a line and I'm sure they'll ask me to send it in. I have the 1.0.5 firmware installed.

Here is the link to the 20D firmware upgrade. I'm shocked you haven't heard of this problem some people are having with them locking up. the firmware fixes it.

RNL, don't be shocked: I have 1.0.5 installed already, as per Canon's instructions (no lens during install etc.) and I still have the problem. I appreciate everyone's input on this. I'll see what the chaps over at Canon support have to say and will give an update when (if?) I get it fixed. Any links to others having the same problem might be helpful. I couldn't find any myself.

Yep...that was me who had the trouble with the Mk II & 550EX freezing up... Something tells me that the 550EX just isn't completely compatable with the newest cameras for some goofy reason... It never did that to any of my film bodies...nor to any of my digital bodies...but I have heard of it locking up on 20D and Mk II bodies now....go figure..

Look for a firmware update to fix that problem...but most of all, report it to Canon...so they are aware of it even if you don't send your camera in for service..

Thanks, JP. Now I think about it, it never did it on my 10D or A2E, just the 20D. More of an annoyance than anything. 2500 shots into it and it's happened three times, but it was at a wedding today and I missed a cute shot. Not what you expect from the boys over at Canon.

That's right... do not install 1.04...that could kill your camera... Canon even dumped that upgrade after less than a week...then two days later, they came out with 1.05.. ...Apparently, if you owned a Canon CF card, and used it to upload the 1.04, it would lock up the camera so bad that it became a $1,500.00 paper weight..besides, Lexar 80x cards are much better..

Oh, here is a tip for you.. I have also found that the "Promaster" batteries made for the 10D, 20D, D60 and D30 cameras last longer than the batteries that Canon supplies with their cameras....and they cost less too....go figure.. :P

Good tip, JP. I went with a set of three "Infinity" batteries (also half the price) when I got the 20D via Jason and Unique. Seems like they have a longer life than my genuine Canon batteries on my 10D as well.
