Lets say you are shooting with a Digital Rebel and you had a good portrait lens with it.. You are happy with the lens and the results you are getting... You get $1500 one night from stripping down at the local club... Now do you buy a Canon 20D or a 70-200L IS Canon Lens.....hmmm... What whould you do?

Casey

Part of the question is what do you want to do with your photography. If you're doing it for you and just for fun, then buy the lens. A great lens is always a good investment and the next time you're flush you can always upgrade the body.

However, if you're going to do client work and all you have is the Rebel -- then you need a backup body. The 20D becomes your primary and the digital Rebel hangs around as a backup.

What I want to know is how did you get paid to strip. They'd probably pay me to keep my clothes ON!

From a fellow Texan, at $1500 a night, I'd do it again and pick up both. Alwasy heard Tyler / Longview had a seedy side, but never realized a male stripper could earn $1500 a night. Anyway, I have nothing constructive to add to the Connon debate since I am a Nikon user, but if you're ever down Austin way, I'd love to hook up with you for a beer or a shoot. There are some amazing models here in Austin.

Looks to me like you're doing mostly portrait work. If that's the case, get the 20D and hang on to the DRebel as a backup body. I would only buy a $1500 lens w/IS if I were shooting sports and really needed it at long focal lengths.

How do you define a good portrait lens exactly? I shoot with a Canon D30 still and my portrait lens of choice as a 70-210 f2.8 but no IS. I use that lens unless I have a particular reason to go wider for a desired effect. I tend to want to blur the background most of the time. But, as someone else said, unless sports or wildlife photography is in your future I would save the $500 and get the non IS version.

Take the $1500 and buy lenses.... good lenses. You've got a great camera you can use the lenses to take better photos. Maybe some day when you actually think that a better camera will improve your photos them upgrade your camera and be happy that you will have all the wonderful lenses to use with it. But for now the DR will more than adequately allow you to take great pictures and improve your skills.

sounds like you're already leaning towards the 20D since you noted you're happy with your current lens but you did not mention the same regarding the DR>

course, you could always ebay the DR, put that money with the stripping money, and have almost enough for both.
